Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
Issued by National Weather Service Portland OR
809 PM PDT Wed May 28 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Upper level ridging over the area will keep
conditions dry across western Washington tonight. A frontal
system will then move through the area Thursday morning, bringing
cooler temperatures and a chance of showers. Warmer and drier
conditions return Friday, before cooler weather and chances of
showers return over the weekend. Weak disturbances moving into the
region at times early next week will maintain shower chances for
the Cascades.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...The latest forecast
remains on track with no updates this evening. An upper level
ridge over the Pacific Northwest will continue to push eastward
tonight as an upper level trough approaches the area from the
west. Satellite imagery shows mostly clear skies across the
interior this afternoon, with stratus starting to push inland
along the coast. Expect dry conditions to persist through this
evening, with increasing cloud cover along the coast.
Thursday will bring cooler, cloudier, and wetter weather back to
western Washington as the upper level trough swings across the
region. Rain associated with the surface front will start to move
inland along the coast overnight and looks to push into the
interior for the morning commute between 12-15Z. The bulk of the
precipitation will be along the coast and across the North and
Central Cascades, where amounts could approach half an inch in
some spots. Amounts across the interior lowlands look lighter -
and will generally range from a couple hundredths of an inch to a
quarter of an inch. Drier conditions are expected for the lowlands
again by the late afternoon hours as the system quickly exits the
region. High temperatures will be roughly 10 to 15 degrees cooler
across the interior, topping out in the upper 60s to low 70s.
Highs along the coast will top out in the upper 50s to low 60s.
Weak ridging will then move over the region on Friday for another
warmer and drier day across western Washington. Temperatures will
climb back into the mid 70s to low 80s across the interior and
into the upper 60s to low 70s for the coast.
The next frontal system will arrive on Saturday and bring the next
round of showers and cooler, cloudier conditions. The front looks
weaker than Thursday`s and only looks to to bring a couple hundredths
of an inch of rain to spots- most likely along the coast and from
areas Seattle northward. High temperatures will top out in the
upper 60s to mid 70s across the interior and in the 60s for areas
along the coast.
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...The weather pattern late
in the weekend will generally be characterized by upper level
troughing to the north and east of the area and a ridge of high
pressure building over the northeastern Pacific. The low will sink
southward towards the Interior West early next week, but will help
maintain northerly flow aloft across western Washington. This
could allow for weak disturbances to move into the region from the
north next week and could generate shower activity at times
across the Cascades. Temperatures across the region look to remain
closer to just above seasonal norms as low level flow remains
onshore.

.AVIATION...Surface southwesterly winds to remain breezy this
evening with VFR cigs for all except HQM. Winds continue to range
between 10 and 15 kts, with gusty conditions along the Strait of
Juan de Fuca to around 30 to 35 kts. High pressure and VFR cigs
aren`t anticipated to be long lived as another trough will move
through the area tomorrow morning. Rain will likely begin along
the coast between 09Z and 10Z, moving through Puget Sound by 12Z
to 13Z. Expect MVFR cigs for the interior as the rain moves
through, with IFR cigs on the coast. Most of the rain showers will
clear out by Thursday afternoon (may be a weak convergence zone
around KPAE). Improvements to VFR with clearing will take place
Thursday afternoon after 18-20Z.
KSEA...VFR skies through the evening with breezy southwest winds
at 10 kt gusting to 20 kt. Winds ease a bit by 09Z, coincident
with cigs likely dropping to around 025. Rain showers possible at
the terminal after 12Z, with lingering MVFR cigs into tomorrow
afternoon. Possibility for clearing/improvement to VFR after
18-20Z as the front moves through. South to southwesterly winds
throughout the period.

.MARINE...High pressure remains in place across the area waters
this afternoon. A frontal system will move through the waters
tonight into early Thursday morning. Winds will increase across the
water along with the front but look to remain below Small Craft
Advisory criteria. Behind the front, a push of westerlies down the
Strait of Juan de Fuca will develop this afternoon and this evening,
solidly SCA in the East Entrance with gusts up to gale force through
the Central Strait. High pressure rebuilds over the coastal waters
Thursday. Another push is expected Thursday evening, for which a
Gale Watch remains in place. Winds ease Thursday night and Friday as
high pressure remains in place. A weak front looks to move across
the area Saturday. Strong high pressure looks to rebuild Saturday
night into Sunday behind the front. In addition to another push of
west winds down the Strait Saturday night, northwesterly winds
increase over the coastal waters and could push seas up to 10-14 ft
Sunday into Monday, both of which may require additional headlines.
Until then, seas look to remain at around 6-8 ft.
