Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
330 AM MDT Sat Jul 19 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Moisture largely decreases over the next several days,
resulting in lessening coverage of daytime convection into early
next week. Further drying and a warming trend is then expected
from midweek onward.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z/6AM Monday)...Morning water vapor analysis
shows a broad trough dipping into the PacNW while a cutoff low
more or less remains stationary along the southern CA coast. While
the latter feature continues to advect some moisture into the
area, the cessation of diurnal heating has allowed shower and
thunderstorm coverage to become much more isolated, and at the
moment largely limited to near the Uintas. As such, most
locations seeing quiet and mild conditions tonight.

For Saturday, the broader PacNW trough shifts in a manner to
result in decreasing moisture advection, despite the cutoff low
moving minimally. Ensembles still however support a corridor of
enhanced PWATs ~125-150% from southwest Utah into central Utah on
through the Uintas or so. Elsewhere, values fall a little closer
to 100% or normal. Expect the combination of modest synoptic lift
from aforementioned features and daytime heating to yield isolated
to scattered daytime convective development, especially where
that corridor of slightly enhanced moisture remains. That said, it
is still a trend downward from Friday`s moisture/support, so
expect less coverage in turn. Still, what does develop will be
capable of lightning, gusty outflow winds, and periods of
moderately heavy rain. Those planning recreation at any rain
sensitive areas (slot canyons, typically dry washes, slickrock
areas, etc.) will still want to keep an eye on the weather
accordingly.

Sunday largely sees something of a continuation of the pattern
trend, with a slight deepening to the PacNW trough, and a
continued churn of the near-stationary southern CA cutoff low.
Flow will support a continued decrease to available moisture, and
in turn daytime convective coverage becomes further isolated in
nature. Temperatures also trend upwards a couple degrees or so in
most places.

Late Sunday into the overnight hours, the cutoff trough begins
interacting with a system shifting off the Mexican coast and
lifting northward. This will pull a bit more moisture towards the
area, though even as the cutoff low begins to eject northeastward
given a continued deepening to the PacNW trough, precipitation
chances remain fairly low overnight.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z/6AM Monday)...A longwave trough will track
into the northwest U.S. during the weekend. It will become
positively-tilted Monday, with enhanced southwest winds throughout
southwest Wyoming and Utah. Wind gusts will exceed 25 mph for
southwest Wyoming and much of western Utah. Isolated to scattered
showers and thunderstorms, primarily around mountainous terrain in
southern Utah, and associated moisture in that portion of the
state will keep relative humidity values generally in the teens.
The enhanced winds and low relative humidity will result in
critical fire weather conditions for those locations.

The longwave trough will lift to the north Tuesday. That will
allow for lighter winds. A ridge of high pressure that will build
into the southeast U.S. will retrograde through the week, also
contributing to lighter winds. As it tracks west, drier conditions
will build in. Although winds will be lighter Tuesday, relative
humidity will drop to lower values than Monday.

The ridge will track east through the week, building into the
Great Plains later in the week. Showers and thunderstorms will
become more isolated through the week, with largely dry conditions
throughout southwest Wyoming and Utah around Thursday or Friday.

Temperatures for the urban corridor of northern Utah will
generally reach the mid 90s each day, with most other valleys in
the low or mid 90s, and lower Washington County from 100-105F.

&&

.AVIATION...KSLC...Clouds will decrease through the morning, with
mostly clear conditions by 19Z. Light southeast winds will
transition to northwest between 19-20Z. There is a 10-20% chance
that a shower or thunderstorm to the south or east gets close
enough to bring gusty, erratic outflow winds through 00Z.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Isolated to scattered showers
and thunderstorms are likely after 18Z south and east of KSLC.
North of there, mostly clear conditions with relatively light
winds are likely. Gusty, erratic outflow winds are likely near
showers and thunderstorms.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Weather pattern supports a decreasingly favorable
moisture tap moving through the weekend. With the moisture then
gradually decreasing, expect less coverage of daytime convection
on Saturday. That said, what does form will still be capable of
brief periods of moderately heavy rain, lightning, and gusty
erratic outflow winds. Activity will begin to decrease through the
mid to late evening hours. A similar setup is anticipated for
Sunday, though with convective coverage decreasing further.

On Monday a weak cutoff system will get pulled through the area
as a trough of low pressure approaches. While this will briefly
bring a bit more mositure and precipitation potential to southern
Utah, it will also result in an uptick in afternoon wind gusts.
Magnitudes appear somewhat borderline, but anticipate some areas
to see locally critical fire weather conditions where humidity
values are sufficiently low. Wind will trend down by Tuesday, but
still could see some areas/periods of critical fire weather
conditions during the afternoon. From midweek onward, pattern
supports a warming/drying trend, with a corresponding decrease to
overnight humidity recoveries and afternoon minimum values.
