Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Portland OR 306 AM
PDT Wed Apr 16 2025
.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will allow dry conditions and above
normal temperatures to persist through the end of the work week as
our stretch of pleasant weather continues. Then Sunday into Monday
general model consensus favors the return of light rain chance in a
addition to noticeable cooler temperatures.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday Night...A very weak shortwave
trough impacts the region on Wednesday, bringing slightly depressed
temperatures due to weak onshore flow. That said, relatively dry
conditions near the surface ensure that no precipitation is expected.
Inland afternoon temperatures around the mid to upper 60s on
Wednesday, closer to the upper 50s at the coast. Switching to
offshore flow Thursday ridging builds back into the area, and warmer
temperatures expected on Thursday and Friday. Thursday afternoon
high temperatures see a 40-70% chance of exceeding 70 degrees in the
Willamette Valley and SW Washington lowlands. This increases to 70-
90% on Friday afternoon, which will be the warmest day of this
stretch. No impactful weather expected during this time period, with
dry conditions throughout. /JLiu
.LONG TERM...Saturday through Tuesday...For the weekend
a pattern change looks to be on the horizon. Long range models have
the Thursday/Friday ridge rapidly breaking down as an elongated,
shortwave Alaskan trough pushes through the region. This trough
looks to bring much cooler, near normal temperatures as well as some
precipitation the second half of the weekend and into early next
week however at this point it doesn`t appear particularly strong or
impactful. -Schuldt/42

.AVIATION...VFR conditions with most clear skies through the TAF
period. With clear skies and a northerly flow along the coast,
patchy MVFR CIGs have developed. Will continue to see these variable
conditions persist through around 17Z Wednesday. Period of highest
confidence for more persistent MVFR and even some isolated IFR would
be after 13Z Wednesday. Northerly winds will increase again along
the coast after 16Z Wednesday as the thermal trough begins to shift
inland. Inland terminals will have generally northwesterly winds
under 10 kt through the TAF period.
Higher resolution model runs have suggested a period of LLWS after
06Z Thursday as a frontal system shifts eastward near the coast.
The E-W pressure gradient will increase and thus winds aloft
(between 1000-2000 ft AGL) will be gusty from the east with speeds
around 35 kt. LLWS impacts will be greatly dependent on the surface
winds remaining light and northwesterly.
PDX AND APPROACHES...VFR. After 05Z Thursday, winds between
1000-2000 ft will become easterly between 20-35 kt. These
increased easterly winds will peak around 12Z Thursday. Could see
impacts of LLWS due to surfacewinds being less than 10 kt and
from the northwest. If winds become more unidirectional from the
east, then LLWS criteria will not be met.

.MARINE...High pressure offshore will maintain breezy northerly
winds this week. Northerly wind waves along with a northwesterly
swell are bringing seas to around 9-11 ft at 15 seconds this
morning. Winds are increasing within the outer waters with buoy
46050 already gusting to 30 kt. The northern waters are slightly
more stalled. Seas will slowly ease this afternoon, though gusty
winds will persist slightly longer. Have extended the Small Craft
Advisory for PZZ273 due to that zone holding onto gusts right
around 20-25 kt. Could see some isolated gusts after the advisory
expires, but not expected to be widespread.
On Thursday, a cold front will push inland increasing westerly
flow and bringing active weather for the first time in days. Seas
will fall to around 4-6 ft at 12 seconds Thursday through the
weekend.
