Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Norman OK
106 PM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025

...New NEAR TERM, SHORT TERM...

.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 105 PM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025

 - Hot and humid conditions expected this weekend into next week.

 - Rain chances will be near zero through the middle of the
   upcoming week.

&&

.NEAR TERM...
(Rest of today and tonight)
Issued at 105 PM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025

A 594 to 596 dam mid-level ridge is centered across the
southern/southeastern U.S., which has resulted in a typical hot
and humid afternoon across Oklahoma and north Texas.

There is a west to east gradient in moisture, with dew points in
the 70s deg near I-35 to the east. The most dangerous (highest)
heat indices will be across across southeast/east central
Oklahoma, where dew points are in the mid 70s deg F. Heat indices
in this area will approach 110 deg F in some locations. A modest
surface pressure gradient is resulting in breezy southerly winds,
which will help temper the wet bulb globe temperatures (especially
west of I-35, where winds will be the strongest). Nevertheless,
high to extreme risk heat risk is expected across east
central/southeast Oklahoma this afternoon where the dew points
will be the highest and the winds the lightest.

These southerly winds will result in a warm night with low
temperatures only falling into the mid to upper 70s deg F.

.SHORT TERM...
(Sunday through Monday night)
Issued at 105 PM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025

The heat will continue on Sunday and Monday with the summertime
ridge remaining entrenched across the area. The low-level thermal
ridge is forecast to strengthen Sunday afternoon, which results
in increasing 850 mb temperatures. As a result, surface
temperatures are forecast to increase by a couple degrees tomorrow
afternoon.

Advection of higher dew points at low-levels (e.g., 850 mb)
should limit the vertical mixing of dew points even with the
higher temperatures. As a result, heat indices are forecast to be
even higher with most locations forecast to between 105 to 110
deg F. The exception will be across west central Oklahoma and
parts of western north Texas, where dew points will be lower. A
Heat Advisory was issued for much the area.

Monday will be similar to Sunday with heat indices once again
ranging from 100 to 110 deg F. A Heat Advisory will likely be
needed for parts of the area on Monday.

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday through Friday)
Issued at 1244 AM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025

Through the middle of the upcoming week upper ridge will remain
dominate feature from the southern Plains into the southeast and
perhaps beyond. However, some indications are that the ridge may
retrograde sufficiently late Wednesday into Thursday to allow
shortwave troughs that lift north from Mexico through the High
Plains to shift far enough east to bring a low chance of rain the
the Panhandles and perhaps northwest Oklahoma. Otherwise, summer-
like conditions are likely to continue.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1202 PM CDT Sat Jul 19 2025

VFR conditions persist with gusty winds diminishing overnight.
LLWS is possible early Sunday morning for KPNC and KSWO.
