- Unseasonably mild weather persists through Saturday with near
  record to record warm temperatures on Christmas Day.

- Some difficult crosswinds across north to south oriented roads
  and highways across northeast and east central New Mexico today
  through Saturday due to breezy to locally gusty winds.

- A strong backdoor cold front will enter eastern New Mexico
  Sunday with much colder temperatures and some gusty winds in
  it`s wake. There is a low chance that snow will develop across
  northern New Mexico on Sunday as a system clips the state.
  Forecast confidence for the snow is low at this time.

.SHORT TERM...
(Tonight through Friday)

A mild and moist airmass is over the Land of Enchantment early this
Christmas morning with PWATS at around 0.6 inches, record values for
late December. However, even with this record moisture column, there
is little to no lift well ahead of the upper low just of the
Oregon/California coast with only isolated showers west of the RGV
and along with the west slopes of the western mountains. Any
isolated showers across western NM should mostly taper off late
Christmas morning as drier mid level air moves in from the west with
just some isolated orographic precipitation along the southwest
slopes of the San Juan and Tusas Mountains. Snow levels will be
really high at around 10,500 ft, so rain will be the dominant
precipitation type, if any does reach the ground. Mild west
southwest flow will result in a record warm Christmas Day for many
with high temperatures 15 to 25 degrees above average! Finally, a
surface lee trough east of the Rockies will result in breezy to
locally windy conditions across northeast and east central NM with
peak wind gusts of around 40 to 45 mph. Friday will be similar to
Christmas Day with no precipitation across the state due to drier
air overhead. Winds across northeast and east central NM will be
lighter than today with peak gusts of 30 to 40 mph along the I-40
corridor. Temperatures will be slightly cooler and a few degrees
below record values, but still around 15 to 20 degrees above average!

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through next Wednesday)

The potent upper level trough/low off the Pacific Coast Friday looks
to finally move inland over the Great Basin during the day Saturday.
With this, some higher mid level moisture looks to move into western
and north central NM to result in some orographic precipitation
across this part of the state. Snow levels will be lower than
Christmas Day at around 8,000 to 8,500 ft as 700 mb temperatures
lower to around -1 deg C. QPF, and thus snow accumulations, will be
limited with at most 1 to 3 inches of snow at most across the Tusas
Mountains. Still have some breezy to locally windy conditions along
and east of the central mountain chain due to another surface lee
trough. High temperatures lower a touch more due to the lower upper
level heights, but remain 10 to 20 degrees above average.

A very noticable change arrives on Sunday as a northern stream
trough dives southeast across the Rockies and into the Great Plains.
This trough will bring a potent backdoor front into northeast NM
Sunday morning and eventually all of eastern NM by the early
afternoon with a Pacific front pushing through western and central
NM at the same time. With these fronts, temperatures finally fall to
near average values for late December with 40s and 50s for highs
rather than the 60s and 70s these past 2 weeks. Potential for some
light snow across northern NM, mainly during the 2nd half of
Sunday, due to upslope flow behind the backdoor front and mid to
upper level lift from the trough axis swinging through. The
backdoor front will push through the gaps of the central mountain
chain Sunday night into Monday morning resulting in a gusty east
wind for eastern ABQ, Santa Fe and Carrizozo. The true temperature
effects of the front will be felt Sunday night and Monday with
Monday morning lows in the upper single digits to low 20s and
Monday afternoon highs in the low to mid 40s across lower
elevations. These temperatures will be more December like and
definitely a shock to the system given the recent record warmth.
After a seasonably cold Monday night/ Tuesday morning with
temperatures in the teens to around 20, high temperatures on
Tuesday warm back up to slightly above average as an upper high
builds in from the west. The warmup continues as we close out 2025
due to the upper high moving overhead with highs on New Year`s
Eve around 10 to 15 degrees above average.

Light rain showers across the lower RGV early this morning should
taper off shortly after sunrise. More isolated to scattered
showers across far northwest NM along the south and southwest
slopes of the San Juan and Tusas Mountains including KFMN during
the day. Low chance (20 to 30 %) for brief periods of MVFR
ceilings at KFMN late this morning. Mountain obscurations across
the Chuska, Tusas, and Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Low level wind
shear along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and
portions of the east central plains through mid this morning.
Breezy to windy conditions beginning late this morning along and
just east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains (KAXX, KRTN, KLVS,
KSXU) with peak gusts of 30 to 40 kt. Clearing skies for most
after sunset with lingering low clouds across Chuska, Tusas, and
Sangre De Cristo Mountains resulting in mountain peak obscurations
overnight.

No critical fire weather conditions expected as we close out 2025.
Some elevated fire weather conditions across northeast and east
central New Mexico Christmas Day, Friday and Saturday due to breezy
to locally gusty west winds, mild temperatures, ERCs around the 50
percentile, and minimum relative humidity values around 20 to 25
percent. Colder and more typical December temperatures Sunday and
Monday due to a potent backdoor front. Some light snow potentially
across north central and northeast New Mexico for the 2nd half of
Sunday. Milder and above average temperatures return in the last two
days of 2025 as high pressure builds in from the west.
