.SYNOPSIS...
A white Christmas is in store but also some bitterly cold
temperatures. A cold front will cross the region today but aside
from some light snow or snow showers, the main change will be
much colder weather on Friday. The next storm looks to most
likely miss our area to the south, but some light snow is
possible over far southern New Hampshire Saturday. Then a more
robust winter storms sets its sights on New England Sunday night
into Monday. While this storm does not appear likely to remain
all snow this time, significant travel disruptions are likely
given the high volume of holiday travelers.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Key Messages:

-Snow showers will bring light accumulations today that could
 produce slick travel.

-Temperatures drop sharply this afternoon behind a cold front.
 Any damp surfaces from melting snow or snow shower activity
 will potentially freeze quickly this afternoon into the
 evening.

Forecast Details:

A short wave over SE Canada will sharpen as it dives southeast
today with a surface low crossing northern Maine towards Nova
Scotia this afternoon. The attendant cold front will cross the
forecast area late this morning with snow showers breaking out
NW to SE through sunrise. Numerous snow showers in the mountains
may allow for a few inches of accumulation at the summits with
1-2 inches in the valleys. While areas downstream of the
mountains will see chances for snow showers, accumulations will
generally be less than an inch. The exception will be towards
the Mid Coast where enhanced convergence with an onshore
component of the wind bringing accumulations to around 1-2
inches.

Southwest flow ahead of the front will allow for temperatures to
rise into the 20s north to low 30s south before the front
crosses. The passage of the front will bring temperatures
dropping quickly this afternoon. The combination of any melting
of recent snow from yesterday or wet surfaces from snow shower
activity will bring the potential for black ice on untreated
surfaces. Winds will ramp up this afternoon behind the front
with gusts around 35 mph into this evening. These winds may aid
in drying any wet surfaces.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
NW winds remain gusty tonight and will gradually subside into
Friday morning. The combination of colder air arriving and gusty
winds will bring wind chills down to -15 to -20F across mountain
zones and several degrees below zero across the south.

High pressure builds in from the north Friday allowing for winds
to become light by afternoon. Despite mostly to partly sunny
skies it will be cold with highs struggling to get into the
teens across the north and 20s across the south.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Key Messages:

-Below normal temperatures will persist Friday night into Saturday.
Low pressure passing well to our south may result in a few snow
showers across southern NH on Saturday morning.

-Widespread wintry precipitation is likely Sunday night into Monday.
This could result in significant holiday travel impacts.

Details:

Much of the forecast is based on the National Blend of
Models (NBM) as forecast uncertainty is largely too high to make any
meaningful changes with any high degree of confidence.

Clouds will increase from south to north on Fri night as an area of
low pressure passes well to our south. There is some potential for a
few snow showers to reach southern NH towards Sat morning but as of
now most guidance keeps the main precipitation shield well to our
south. Low temperatures will range from the single digits to teens
from north to south. Increasing sunshine is then expected on Sat but
it will remain colder than avg with highs mostly into the lower to
middle 20s. Radiational cooling is then possible Sat night with
mainly clear skies, light winds, and fresh snowpack. Lows of below
zero are possible for some northern and valley locations.

An H5 s/wv ridge axis will then cross on Sunday with flow becoming
more southerly. This will help to warm temperatures back into the
30s with partly sunny skies. The forecast then becomes more
complicated Sun night into Monday as an area of low pressure is
progged to cross southern Quebec and then into the Maritimes. The
low passing to our west will encourage this to be a warmer system,
especially aloft but as always will need to watch low-level
temperatures for possible mixed wintry precipitation. Significant
uncertainty exists at this time range with little confidence in
exact precipitation types and therefore stuck to the NBM
solution. Did maintain mixed wintry precipitation wording from
the previous shift. The main takeaway is that this may result in
impacts to holiday travel.

Mainly dry but cold weather looks to return for the middle of next
week.

.AVIATION /04Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Short Term...Variable cloud cover with mix of MVFR to VFR
ceilings are expected into day break. A cold front brings
lowering cigs and -SHSN through mid day with most sites seeing
periods of at least MVFR. KCON to KPWM and points south we see
more in the way of scattered cloud decks and may likely see
prevailing VFR through much of today. NW winds will gust to 30
kts this afternoon into tonight. VFR likely prevails tonight
through Friday.

Long Term...Mainly VFR are expected Fri night through Sun, although
there is low confidence for some -SN to bring some restrictions to
southern NH TAF sites late Fri night into Sat morning. Winds will
primarily be out of the N-NW at 10-15 kts. Precipitation and
restrictions are then likely Sun night into Mon with mixed wintry
ptypes possible. Mainly VFR are then likely towards the middle of
next week.

.MARINE...
Short Term...SW winds will approach 25 kts this morning ahead of
a cold front. The front crosses the waters this evening with NW
Gales expected into Friday morning. A cold air mass moving over
the waters will bring moderate freezing spray tonight from Cape
Elizabeth to points northward.

Long Term...Winds and seas to largely remain below SCA thresholds
through Mon morning. Gusty W winds are then possible later
Monday through Tuesday with gales possible along with increasing
seas.
