.KEY MESSAGES...

* Excessive heat peaks today with highs approaching the upper 90s to
  near the century mark in western Nevada and upper 80s in the
  Sierra.

* Red Flag Warning remains in effect today through Sunday for
  gusty winds, low humidity, and a chance of dry thunderstorms
  near the eastern Sierra.

* Temperatures cool 510 degrees early next week with increasing
  potential for showers, especially across southern and higher
  terrain.

.DISCUSSION...

A strong upper-level ridge remains centered over the Great Basin,
supporting anomalously hot and dry conditions across the region.
Yesterday, Reno and South Lake Tahoe each tied daily records from
1986, reaching 96 degrees and 84 degrees, respectively  around
1718 degrees above normal. Today marks the peak of this heat event,
with highs near or exceeding 100 degrees across western Nevada and
upper 80s to near 90 degrees in Sierra valleys. A Heat Advisory is
in effect from 11 AM to 7 PM this evening across the Basin and
Range. Reno has a 50% chance of hitting 100 degrees, which would
mark the earliest triple-digit day on record. Also keep in mind
that rivers and streams will continue to run fast and cold as
snowmelt accelerates, posing a hazard for recreation near the
water.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 AM today through 11 PM
Sunday for areas below 7000 feet in western Nevada and the eastern
Sierra. The leading edge of a Pacific trough will tighten pressure
gradients, producing southwest to west winds of 3035 mph, with
localized gusts near 40 mph this afternoon and up to 45 mph Sunday.
These winds, combined with very low humidity (715%) and poor
overnight recoveries below 3035%, are creating critical fire
weather conditions.

A 1020% chance of isolated dry thunderstorms is possible this
afternoon and evening in the eastern Sierra. Storm chances
increase south of US-50 Sunday and expand MondayTuesday across
southern Mono and Mineral Counties. While some storms may produce
wetting rain, most will remain terrain-anchored and marginally
moist. Temperatures begin cooling early next week with highs
dropping into the mid 80s across western Nevada and 70s in the
Sierra valleys.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions prevail through this evening, though hot temperatures
will contribute to high density altitude, especially at KRNO, KCXP,
and Sierra terminals (KTVL, KTRK). Increasing southwest to west
winds will produce gusts of 2530 kts, locally up to 35 kts at KRNO,
KNFL, and KMMH. Expect periods of turbulence over and east of ridge
lines, especially during peak afternoon mixing.

Between 21Z and 03Z, a 1020% chance of isolated dry thunderstorms
exists across the eastern Sierra and crest areas. If storms develop,
expect erratic outflows up to 3540 kts, brief visibility
reductions, and potential wind shifts near KTVL, KTRK, and KMMH.
Sunday will bring stronger southwest winds with gusts up to 40 kts,
especially for terminals along the Sierra Front and west-central NV.

.FIRE WEATHER...

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 AM Saturday through 11 PM
Sunday for zones 274 (Southern Mono), 420 (Northern Sierra Front),
421 (Southern Sierra Front), and 429 (Lahontan Basin).

This warning covers critical fire weather conditions driven by
low humidity (715%), poor overnight RH recovery (2035%), and
increasing southwest to west winds gusting 3035 mph today, then
3545 mph Sunday, especially in wind-prone valleys. Fuels remain
marginally cured, but recent fire activity confirms their
receptiveness.

There is a 1020% chance of isolated dry thunderstorms today,
primarily across the eastern Sierra. The dry sub-cloud layer and
gusty outflow potential increase the risk of lightning ignitions and
overnight holdovers, which may reignite under stronger winds on
Sunday. The overlap of strong wind, low RH, and receptive fuels
makes Sunday the peak fire weather concern for much of the region.

Storm chances increase Monday and Tuesday, especially across Mono
and Mineral Counties, as deeper moisture enters the region. While
some convection may yield wetting rain, most storms will remain high-
based and terrain-driven. Cooler temperatures and lighter winds
return mid to late next week.
