Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
124 PM PDT Sun Apr 13 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Pleasant weather and warm conditions greet the Silver
State for the start of the work week. Under high pressure and
southerly breezes the area will see warm temperatures through mid
week. Change is on the way though in the form of a low pressure
system Thursday and Friday that will return cooler weather and
precipitation chances back to the region.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight into Tuesday morning

An upper level trough over the Great Basin Sunday responsible for
the boundary that cooled temperatures slightly gets pushed to the
southeast tonight as a ridge takes position over the western CONUS
into the start of the week. A cutoff low to the southwest off the
southern CA coast will create a split flow of sorts over the
western half of the country.

Overnight lows down into the 30s behind the previous days front
will rebound Monday afternoon well into the 60s to near 70. This
is in response to low level flow that begins the day as northerly
in the eastern flank of the ridge but shifts to southerly by the
afternoon as the ridge migrates east. An HPC develops over the
area Monday keeping afternoon winds fairly calm. Under southerly
flow overnight lows into Tuesday morning are a few degrees warmer
in the upper 30s and 40s ahead of another quiet weather day in the
early week.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday

A ridge of high pressure will extend northwestward across Northern
Nevada Tuesday. High temperatures Tuesday afternoon will be twelve
to fourteen degrees above seasonal values. An upper-level area of
low pressure will approach the coast of Southern California
Tuesday night. This cyclone aloft will move inland over Southern
California Wednesday. There may be enough atmospheric instability
to support isolated, dry thunderstorm formation in parts of
Northern and Central Nevada Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday
evening. Maximum temperatures Wednesday afternoon will be around
ten degrees above normal for this time of year.

An upper-level area of low pressure will drop southward from
Canada into the Pacific Northwest Wednesday night. This cyclone
aloft will continue to progress southward into and through the
Silver State Thursday and Thursday night. The upper-level area of
low pressure will move southward into Southern California Friday.
Strong northwest wind gusts near 40 mph are expected in parts of
Northern and Central Nevada Thursday afternoon. Travel may be
difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles. Blowing dust
could reduce visibilities at times.

Periods of precipitation are anticipated in Eastern Nevada
Thursday morning through Friday afternoon. Snow levels will start
at around 7,000 feet Thursday morning, before dropping to about
4,500 feet Thursday night. Snow levels will rise to around 6,000
feet Thursday afternoon. The majority of precipitation will fall
in White Pine County Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening. One
to two inches of snow is possible over passes and summits along
Highway 50 between Eureka and Ely Thursday evening through Friday
morning. Two to four inches of snow is conceivable over passes
and summits along Highway 50 east of Ely Thursday evening through
Friday morning. Here are probabilities of rainfall amounts of one
tenth of an inch or more for select locations in Northern and
Central Nevada from Thursday morning through Friday afternoon:

Ruth - 70%
Lund - 70%
Ely - 65%
Eureka - 65%
McGill - 65%
Wells - 60%
Spring Creek - 55%
Owyhee - 45%
Elko - 40%
Jackpot - 40%

There may be a bit of precipitation in Central Nevada Friday night
and Saturday along the far northern periphery of the
aforementioned upper-level area of low pressure. This cyclone
aloft will quickly kick eastward across the Desert Southwest
Saturday night and next Sunday. A warming trend is expected next
weekend. By next Sunday afternoon, high temperatures will be six
to eight degrees above seasonal values.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions will prevail at all terminals through at least the
next 24 hours. Northerly wind gusts near 20 knots at KWMC, KTPH,
and KELY will abate by 03Z this evening at the latest.

&&

.LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
None.
