National Weather Service Elko NV

.SYNOPSIS...With one last chance for record heat Friday, our warm-
up comes to an end Saturday as a upper trough pushes a cold front
through the Silver state. This front will bring cooler
temperatures, but little in the way off precipitation. High
pressure will returns Monday through mid-week, but not nearly as
strong as before, As models hint at a return of precipitation
chances late next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday night
Upper ridge responsible for the warm temperatures over the last
few days is starting its shift eastward, but not before giving
another chance at meeting or breaking some high temperature
records. Central Nevada will be the focus for record heat with
both Ely and Eureka forecast to beat their daily records Friday
afternoon. Northern Nevada temperatures look to be just slightly
cooler than Thursday as increasing clouds act to take the edge off
temperatures. Winds will be breezy Friday with SW winds at 10 MPH
to 20 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH. Overnight lows Friday night into
Saturday morning will only drop into the upper 30s to upper 40s.
Saturday will see a upper trough move across the Pacific northwest
into Montana, Models have been trending a more northerly track
with this system and recent runs have continued to favor this
solution. So for sensible weather any precipitation that does fall
will be limited to the far north of the state along the
Oregon/Idaho border, actual chances remain low at about 10% to 30%
with light rain being the primary precipitation type as snow
levels will be near 9000 feet. The main impact from this system
will be cooler temperatures following a cold front that will make
its way into Nye County by Sunday morning. Temperatures Saturday
afternoon will be noticeably cooler north of the US-50 corridor,
with highs ranging from the upper 50s to upper 60s. South of US-50
Highs will be warmer ranging from the upper 60s to upper 70s.
Winds will shift to be out of the NW behind the front but will
still be breezy with speeds reaching 10 MPH to 20 MPH with gusts
up to 35 MPH possible. The Cold front by Sunday morning should
reach the US-6 corridor, and low temperature to the north of US-6
reflect the cooler air-mass with lows ranging in the middle 20s to
middle 30s, while Tonopah and Duckwater will be warmer with lows
in the 40s.
.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Friday
A shortwave and associated boundary will trek across the state on
Sunday. Moisture availability throughout the long term period is
lacking at best so impacts from the system will be fairly minimal.
Limited CAPE over White Pine county Sunday afternoon combined with
some localized surface based frontogenesis may create isolated
shower and thunderstorm activity with maybe a few raindrops for
higher elevations in eastern portions of the county. High
temperatures Sunday will fall back into the 40s and 50s behind the
front.
A quiet start to the work week is in store for the area under
ridging that builds into the western CONUS behind the retreating
wave. Afternoon highs in the 60s to near 70 and lows in the 30s
and 40s will persist through Wednesday. Moisture in the profile
overhead continues to be sparse until Wednesday morning. Some CAPE
over central and east-central NV on Tuesday (40-80 J/kg) and LI`s
of negative digits may prompt dry convection late Tuesday
afternoon. A shortwave traversing the northern Rockies will drag
its axis just north of the state over southern Idaho. PW
associated with the system will skirt the northern border but the
system is really not a factor for the area at this time.
Temperatures will gradually increase through Thursday as low-level
flow is directed by the axis of the ridge over the area this week.
Northerly flow Monday transitions to west and then south-
southwest by mid week as the axis propagates over the Great Basin.
Simultaneously, a deep cutoff low off the CA coast will begin to
push towards the CONUS late this week. Model disagreement exists
on when the low will impact the area with the ECMWF bringing the
low ashore sooner than GFS and other models. As a result, ECMWF
has Friday as a cooler day for the area with precipitation in the
forecast whereas other models continue the warm, dry trend
through Friday.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR conditions are anticipated at all terminals
through Saturday afternoon. Gusty winds at all terminals Friday
afternoon and evening in the 20-25KT range before diminishing
after sunset. No precipitation is expected at any terminal through
Saturday afternoon though stronger winds are expected across the
area Saturday midday and afternoon in the 30-35KT range.
