Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
230 AM PDT Wed May 14 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Unsettled weather continues over the Great Basin today
as the upper level trough brings in more more moisture. Drier
conditions followed by a high pressure will build across the
region starting Wednesday night and lasting through Friday.
Another round of active weather will move across the west Friday
night through Saturday with additional showers and mountain snow.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through tomorrow
The upper level trough will slowly move further east however
there will still be chances for more scattered showers and some
isolated thunderstorms mainly across northeastern Nevada in Elko
County. Drier conditions are expected everywhere else with warmer
temperatures in the 50s to 60s during the day. Breezy
westerly/northwesterly winds at 10-15 mph (20-25 mph in northern
Elko County).
Overnight and tomorrow, drier conditions take hold of the region
as slight upper ridging moves over the west. Overnight lows
expected in the 30s with Thursday highs warming into the 60s to
70s. Some breezy westerly winds in the afternoon at 10-15 mph.
&&
.LONG TERM...Friday through next Wednesday
Shortwave energy clips Northeastern Nevada on Friday resulting in
rain showers, mainly confined to Elko County where QPF amounts
will range from a trace up to 0.05 inches.
Broad trough energy moves in along the west coast Friday evening,
which will move inland through the Pacific NW and Northern CA
overnight. Widespread rain showers are expected across most all of
Northern and Central NV by early Saturday morning with numerous
showers and isolated thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and early
evening. Temperatures trend cooler through the weekend with highs
in the 60s Saturday and mid 40s to mid 50s Sunday. Showers
continue across most of Northern and Central NV Saturday night
through Sunday afternoon. QPF amounts this weekend for most valley
locations are expected to range from a quarter to a half inch.
Snow levels start out around 9000 feet early in the weekend,
lowering to between 6500 and 7000 feet later on Sunday. Many of
the mountain of Northern and Central Nevada are expected to
receive a couple to a few inches of new snow this weekend with
the highest mountains receiving a foot or more of snow.
Trough energy exits eastward later on Sunday with showers
tapering off from west to east. A few light showers linger across
the eastern halves of Elko and White Pine Counties on Monday with
QPF amounts likely ranging from a trace up to a few hundredths of
an inch. Temperatures begin to trend warmer on Monday however a
northwesterly flow aloft will keep afternoon highs in the mid 50
to mid 60 range. At this time Tuesday and Wednesday look to be
dry.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR conditions forecast to be the primary flight
conditions at all terminal sites through Wednesday evening.
Showers are currently waning across the area tonight, but VCSH
will still be possible for KWMC, KBAM, KEKO, and KELY through 12Z
Wednesday morning. Ceilings will be slow to rise through the
overnight with CIGs near 3000 feet rising to 8000 feet by mid
morning. Upper trough lifting east will still be close to trigger
some isolated convective showers Wednesday afternoon across far
northeastern Elko County, but coverage will be lower than Tuesday
as POPs below 20% for KEKO and below 10% elsewhere.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Scattered showers expected to continue across
northeastern Nevada in zones 438, 489 and 470 throughout the day
with a 15% chance for some isolated thunderstorms. Breezy
westerly/northwesterly winds at 10-15 mph, gusts 20-25 mph with
min RH staying above 15%. Dry and warmer conditions Thursday and
Friday followed by another potential for more unsettled weather
Friday night into Saturday.
&&
.LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
