.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 232 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025
Today and Tonight...
A front moved through the area this morning, with winds shifting to
the north and becoming gusty. Temperatures this afternoon are in the
40s to low 50s. Northerly winds are gusting 35 to 45 mph, making for
a chillier feel to the day despite the well above normal
temperatures.
Aloft a trough currently resides over the northern Rockies, with a
cold front moving into northern portions of the forecast area. The
front will push through the rest of the forecast area this evening,
with northerly winds remaining breezy overnight, gusting 20 to 25
mph. The upper level trough will continue to deepen overnight which
will allow arctic air to flow into the area behind the cold front.
Lows tonight will drop into the single digits (north) to low teens
(south). Breezy winds combined with cold temperatures will lead
to wind chill values near and below zero.
Saturday through Tuesday morning.
Arctic air will continue to build over the area on Saturday as
troughing deepens over the central United States. Highs on Saturday
will struggle to climb much above 20 degrees. A shortwave within the
broader trough aloft will bring even colder air into the area
Saturday night. Temperatures Sunday morning fall to near and below
zero. Bitterly cold wind chills arrive with this shot of cold air
early Sunday morning as wind chill values fall -10 to -25 degrees,
coldest along/north of I-80. Highs on Sunday will only climb into
the teens. Combined with northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, wind chill
values during the day will peak right around zero degrees.
Monday looks to the the overall coldest day of this stretch of
arctic air as another shortwave trough moves through the broader
trough. Wind chill values Monday morning will again be
-10 to -25 degrees. Highs on Monday will be in the single digits
(north) and teens (south). Wind chills during the day will once
again remain below zero for most of the forecast area. This
shortwave trough will also bring a low (<15%) chance for snow
to southwestern portions of the forecast area. For now, the
forecast is dry, but can`t rule out the potential for light
snow/flurries as this wave moves through. As the base of the
upper level trough moves over the Plains Monday night,
temperatures will fall below zero across the area, with
northern portions of the area potentially falling below -10
degrees. Wind chill values Tuesday morning will be
-15 to -25 degrees.
In collaboration with neighboring offices a Cold Weather
Advisory was issued across all of our Nebraska counties From
12am Sunday through noon on Tuesday. The Advisory was issued
where confidence is highest in seeing the coldest wind chills
(-15 to -25 degrees). While our Kansas counties were not
included in the advisory, bitterly cold temperatures are
possible each night and an advisory may end up being needed if
confidence increases in wind chills of - 15 to -20 degrees.
Overall, bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills are expected
Saturday night through Tuesday morning. Highs will be in the single
digits to teens with lows near or below zero Sunday/Monday night.
Wind chill values of -10 to -25 degrees are expected during the
overnight hours, with daytime wind chills struggling to climb above
zero.
Tuesday Onwards...
The upper level trough which brought the arctic airmass to the area
will depart the area Tuesday morning with ridging building behind
it. Winds will become southwesterly as warm air advection develops
over the area. This will help temperatures climb into the 20s
Tuesday afternoon. Near to above normal temperatures return to the
area Wednesday onwards with highs in the 30s and 40s and lows in the
teens. Dry weather continues through the end of the forecast period
with the CPC 6-10 day outlook favoring near-below normal
precipitation.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SUNDAY/...
Issued at 1140 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025
For KGRI/KEAR Airports:
Significant weather: MVFR CIGs and strong Nrly winds
MVFR stratus has moved into the terminal space this eve and
expect this to persist much of the night, and even into Sat AM.
There are some indications that a break in the stratus could
move in from the NE after 08-09Z, esp at GRI, so brought it back
to TEMPO MVFR in the 09-12Z time frame. Most of the guidance
scatters and lifts the stratus and returns to VFR around midday,
but will still be mostly cloudy due to deck around 12K ft. MVFR
stratus may return once again late Sat eve. Confidence: Medium.
Strong Nrly winds will persist much of the period, with any
meaningful decr to sustained <15kt not coming until late Sat
eve. Until then, expect sustained speeds 18-23kt, and gusts
27-34kt (highest next few hrs). Confidence: High
