.DISCUSSION...
The rest of today through Sunday...
A cold front beginning to move through from the northwest late
this afternoon/early this evening will bring a low (25-45%)
chance of precipitation west of Rosebud county this evening and
along and north of I-94 overnight. Over the northwest, a few
rumbles of thunder are possible through the evening. This first
round of precip is expected to remain fairly light, with the best
chance (45%) for more than 0.1" of precip over northern Wheatland
and Golden Valley counties.
As a trough enters the region, Saturday will see more widespread
precipitation (70-90% chance), beginning in the northwest, and
spreading south and east through the day. Currently, there is a
50-70% chance of at least 0.25" of precip for all but the
southeastern corner of the region, where there is a 20-40% chance.
Thunderstorms are possible, especially in the afternoon and
evening, and the Storm Prediction Center currently has a level 1
of 5 for severe storms over the southeastern portion of the
region, with the main threat being strong winds near 60 mph and
small hail.
For Sunday, there is still some uncertainty in the extent of a
third round of precip. As the trough exits the region, a low will
drop south. However, models disagree on how far south, with the
southernmost track leading to a better chance for precip and the
northernmost track leading to a lower chance. With the cooler
temperatures, lowere elevations may see a rain/snow mix.
Currently, the NBM has a 20-40% chance of precip for Sunday. The
bigger concern for Sunday will be strong winds, with much of the
forecast area having a more than 50% chance of gusts of at least
40 mph, up to a 90% chance in Sheridan county and along the Dakota
border.
Temperatures will become cooler over the weekend, with highs
Saturday ranging from upper 50s over the west to upper 60s over
the east. By Sunday, highs will be in the 40s to low 50s. Archer
Monday through Friday...
Ridging is expected to build over our region to start the next
work week leading to mostly seasonally mild temps. There is a hint
of a breakdown, or at least flattening, of the ridge as some
energy works across southern Canada at midweek. Models currently
differ in timing and influence on our particular CWA. Overall
cluster analysis suggest about a 40-50% chance of a brief somewhat
cooler and wet regime around midweek, but nothing with
significant impacts. Temperatures will be in the 60s to low 70s
most days, with winds fairly light. Overall, should be a week of
typical pleasant spring weather. BT

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions will prevail through this evening...but look for
increasing clouds and possible mountain top obscurations by
tonight. A weak frontal passage will occur this evening, shifting
winds to the north/northwest and bringing a small chance of rain
showers...mainly from KLVM-KBIL-KMLS and routes northward. There
is a 20% chance of MVFR conditions developing in our western
forecast area after 12z Saturday, including KLVM and K1KM. Look
for a more robust band of precipitation/reduced flight conditions
shifting west to east across our area Saturday. BT
