Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Great Falls MT
359 AM MDT Sat Jun 21 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
- Overall, the summer storm is on track, with periods of lower
elevation rain and mountain snow to continue through Sunday.
- Temperatures will be well below normal through Monday morning.
- A return to more typical June conditions expected by the middle
of next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
- Meteorological Overview:
Widespread rain and high mountain snow are affecting much of the
Central and Northern portions of the CWA this morning. Snow levels
are down to about 7000 feet in Glacier Park and around 9000 feet
further south as of early this morning. Overall, snow levels will
continue to lower through tonight across the CWA, going down to
about 5000 or 6000 feet in some areas. The forecast models
indicate a small break in the precipitation at lower elevations
late this morning and into this afternoon. Thus pops are lower
during this time, but with all the recent precipitation, pop up
showers/thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon.
So far, the Cut Bank to Inverness area has had the highest
precipitation, with about 0.75 to over 1 inch of liquid. Precip
amounts have been lighter as you go south and once you get south
of I-90 from Butte to Bozeman it has been really light. Overall,
we are about 1/2 way through this summer storm. Many areas
between today and tomorrow should receive another 0.25 to another
0.75 inches of precipitation, with the Glacier Park area getting
another 1 to 3 inches.
In terms of current statements, the high wind warning for today is
on track for the Cut Bank/Shelby areas. The GFS model continues to
prog the strongest winds between Noon and 6 PM today in this area.
In terms of snowfall, everything is on track for well over a foot
of snow to fall at higher elevations of Glacier Park. Further
south, snow levels will lower tonight, with many mountain ranges
of Central and Southwest MT getting between 2 and 6 inches of
snowfall, with some isolated higher amounts. Thus no changes to
the current winter statements either.
Looking ahead, from Monday through next Saturday, a return to more
typical June conditions is expected. Afternoon temperatures will
warm to slightly above normal readings by Wednesday, which will
then continue into next weekend. The chance for
showers/thunderstorms will become more isolated as we go later
into the week. There will be chances for thunderstorms, but the
overall strength of the upper level disturbances to produce the
precipitation will be on the weaker side, thus the more isolated
potential for storms.
- Forecast Confidence & Scenarios:
There is still reasonably high confidence for strong winds later
today in the Cut Bank and Shelby areas, with the higher guidance
still around 60 percent for the strong winds to occur.
In terms of snowfall, the main concern will be on Sunday morning
if some lower elevation locations have the rain change to snow for
elevations as low as 5000 feet. This could result in some impacts
around Dillon, Bozeman and Lewistown in the nearby adjacent
mountain areas.
Otherwise, the chance for any flooding is on the low side, but we
will continue to monitor areas closely around Glacier Park where
another 1 to 3 inches could fall over the next day or so. Brusda

.AVIATION...
21/12Z TAF Period
Periods of rain and high mountain snow are expected this morning,
with a small break in the precipitation over some areas at lower
elevations. The precipitation becomes more widespread once again
tonight and into Sunday, with snow levels lower to around 5000
feet in some areas. IFR conditions are possible at times in areas
of low clouds and precipitation. Mountain/passes will be obscured
across the CWA through the period. Brusda
