.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 544 PM CST Wed Jan 14 2026
- Small Craft Advisories are in effect through mid-afternoon
Thursday due to cold air advection behind a frontal passage. A
few gusts to gale force are possible.
- A few locations well north of Interstate 12 could briefly fall
below freezing around sunrise Thursday with a more widespread
freeze likely Friday morning.
- According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly
half of all home fires occur between the months of December,
January and February, with the increased risk attributed to the
use of home heating devices such as portable space heaters and
fireplaces. Those planning to use such devices during this
cold snap should safety recommendations - such as using a
screen and keeping a fire extinguisher near all fire places;
and ensuring all space heaters are plugged directly into wall
outlets and placed on level surfaces at least 3 ft from any
flammable materials.

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Thursday night)
Issued at 157 PM CST Wed Jan 14 2026
A large upper trough over the eastern half of the U.S. will
become highly amplified tonight as a 150 knot upper level jet
dives south-southeast over the northern Plains and Upper Midwest,
with an equally strong or perhaps stronger upper jet extending
from the northeast Gulf up along the eastern Seaboard. The base of
this trough will reach as far south as the northern tip of the
Yucatan Peninsula by late tonight. A surface low pressure area
across the northeast states will lift northeast into southwest
Canada by Friday morning, sending an associated strong cold front
rapidly through our area this afternoon. A few light showers are
possible this evening with the passage of the cold front. The
aforementioned upper trough will then lift northeastward Thursday
afternoon and Thursday night, with an upper zonal flow returning
over our area by Friday. We are expecting dry weather conditions
behind the front through Thursday night, with widespread frost
expected to form Thursday night across the northern two-thirds of
the forecast area.
Low temperatures tonight and Thursday night should fall into the
30s, with sub-freezing temperatures expected across our far
northern zones. Apparent temperatures Thursday morning in the 20s
to lower 30s are expected to remain just above cold weather
advisory criteria. High temps Thursday should only range from
48-54 degrees. /22

.LONG TERM...
(Friday through Tuesday night)
Issued at 157 PM CST Wed Jan 14 2026
A nearly identical upper trough will impact the eastern half of
the U.S. through the upcoming weekend. This will also feature a
150 knot upper jet diving south-southeast from south central
Canada over the northern Plains, with an equally strong upper jet
over the eastern CONUS states. This second trough will feature an
associated surface low pressure area moving across the northern
Great Lakes on Friday and Saturday, sending an associated strong
cold front through the northern/central Plains and Upper Midwest
Thursday and Thursday night. This front will continue toward our
region and pass through our area late Friday night into Saturday
morning. Again, a few light showers are possible with the passage
of the cold front.
After a quick moderation in temperatures on Friday with highs in
the middle 60s, low temperatures over the weekend should fall into
the lower to middle 30s, with middle to upper 20s expected across
our far northern zones. Apparent temperatures should again remain
just above cold weather advisory criteria. High temps on Sunday
should only range from 48-54 degrees. /22

(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 544 PM CST Wed Jan 14 2026
VFR conditions across all terminals. There are a few SHRA across
northern Louisiana behind a reinforcing wind shift, but with the
loss of surface heating, there`s a pretty good chance they
dissipate prior to reaching any of the terminals. SCT-BKN decks
with bases near FL040 and FL080 will move across the area this
evening. Drier air should overwhelm the moisture prior to sunrise
Thursday with most terminals SKC for the back half of the forecast
period. Gusty winds over the next 6 hours or so with sustained
winds of 15-20 knots possible. Winds should drop off significantly
beyond 18z Thursday.

.MARINE...
Issued at 157 PM CST Wed Jan 14 2026
A frontal passage during today will bring increasing winds and
seas to the waters by evening. Sustained northwesterly winds to 25
knots are likely overnight into Thursday morning, with a few
gusts to gale force possible. Conditions should improve quickly
Thursday night as high pressure moves across the waters.
Conditions could deteriorate again late Friday night or Saturday.
Cold frontal passages at about 48 hour intervals could produce
Small Craft Advisory conditions over the weekend into early next
week. /22
