Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Jackson MS
1235 PM CDT Fri Apr 11 2025

...New AVIATION...

.MESOSCALE UPDATE...
Issued at 937 AM CDT Fri Apr 11 2025

Morning global guidance continues to show a longwave trough pattern
over the eastern CONUS shifting eastward towards the Atlantic
seaboard. This will allow for the cold front south of the Hwy 84
corridor to push southward towards the Gulf Coast later this
morning. Portions of northeast MS could see a few isolated showers
later this afternoon thanks to cyclonic flow on the western side of
the longwave trough pattern over the eastern CONUS. Pressure
gradients will tighten across our forecast area by noon which will
lead to gusty northwesterly gradient winds. Elsewhere, weather
conditions will be quiet today. Sky conditions will be generally
clear across our area this morning with cloud cover starting to
increase across portions of northeast MS later this afternoon.
Afternoon highs will peak into the low/mid 70s areawide. /CR/

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 357 AM CDT Fri Apr 11 2025

Today through tonight: A longwave upper level trough over the
eastern half of the CONUS will shift eastward to the Atlantic
Coast as we finish up the week and go into the weekend. Cyclonic
flow on the western periphery of the trough will support isolated
diurnal shower activity over northeast portions of the area, but
otherwise, the most notable weather today should be related to
the gusty northwesterly gradient winds. Clear skies and
diminishing wind tonight will support cool overnight lows. /EC/

Friday through Thursday: The longer term is mostly quiet with a
predominately NW flow regime. Reinforcing cold fronts will keep
drier air locked in for much of the period. The dry conditions
will raise some fire weather concerns, despite recent rainfall.
The prolonged dry period will cause fuels to dry, so will be
monitoring this next week. A fast moving cold front pushes south
across the area Tuesday. While there is some weak moisture return,
it is likely inadequate against the quickly advancing dry air in
the wake of the front with dewpoints in the 30s and 40s. Because
of this, the front is likely to push through dry. Perhaps a
sprinkle in the northwest cannot be ruled out. High pressure
regains control Wednesday.

A shortwave pushes across the southern plains Thursday in advance of
a digging longer wave trough. The strong positive tilt results in
meager moisture return. Another reinforcing cold front pushes south
Thursday night. I would not rule out severe potential with this,
despite meager moisture and forcing. It could still be adequate, and
along with steep lapse rates and some shear, some hail and wind
could be possible. The confidence however is low at this time. High
pressure once again becomes dominant in the wake of the cold front
Thursday, bring a return to dry weather later next week. /SAS/

(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1235 PM CDT Fri Apr 11 2025

Some non-impactful isolated showers can`t be ruled out today near
GTR, but other areas remain clear & VFR flight categories the norm
through the next 24 hours. Gusty northwest surface wind will peak
this aftn, sustained up to 15mph & gusts of 20-25mph, winding
down by early evening around 12/00Z Saturday. Winds will lighten &
shift northerly into Saturday. /DC/
