Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Caribou ME
349 PM EDT Tue Aug 12 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain ridged southeast of the region
through tonight. A cold front approaches from the northwest on
Wednesday, then crosses the area Thursday. High pressure then
builds down from Quebec behind the front through Friday. High
pressure will shift overhead Saturday as a cold front approaches
from the northwest. The cold front will swing through Maine on
Sunday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Hot and humid conditions continue into the evening and
then temperatures will cool as the sun goes down. Tonight,
expecting the 500mb ridge to break down in response to a
shortwave approaching from the northwest. Muggy and 60s tonight
across the area. Patchy to areas of fog developing in spots
tonight especially over lakes, ponds and river valleys. There
will once again be some fog developing over the Bay of Fundy and
work down over the Downeast coast but uncertainty on exactly how
dense it will be based on how things have been the last few
nights. Cannot rule out an area of two of less than 1/4mi at
times visibility.
Tomorrow, expecting another hot and humid day but not as hot
with 850mb temps cooling 1-2 degrees across the area. That being
said..still in the upper 80s to low 90s across much of the area.
Winds are turning more south across the entire CWA so low 80s
along the Downeast coast thanks to the seabreeze with 70s on the
islands. Dew points once again will drop into the low to mid 60s
in spots in the afternoon with deep mixing up to 850-825mb.
Still expecting heat index values into the mid to upper 90s for
many locations within the current Heat Advisory. Given that
along with the Heat Risk remaining major in many locations have
made the decision to extend the Heat Advisory through 8PM
Wednesday evening.
Wednesday afternoon a cold front will be crossing south-central
Quebec heading for Maine with elongated 500mb wave. Expecting a
few isolated to scattered thunderstorms to develop along the
Quebec/Maine border after 1-2PM tomorrow. There is a ton of
uncertainty how many storms can develop given the distance away
from the surface front. Any thunderstorm that can develop will
work with 1000-1800j/kg of SBCAPE, 7-8C/km sfc lapse rates,
around 6.5C/km mid level lapse rates and very little shear. This
suggests pulse type storms developing as temperatures likely
reach the convective temps easily. There is a concern for heavy
downpours in these storms given increasing mid level RHs to
80-95 percent, PWATs increasing to 160-190 percent of normal in
the 1.6-2.0 inch range. Moist warm cloud processes will extend
up 11-13kft tomorrow with Corfidi Upshear values less than 10kt
and storm motions less than 15kt. Any storm will be slow moving
and likely to process heavy rain and given that opted to add to
the fcst which matches WPCs ERO for D2. Very dry conditions
lately will mean it will take longer to cause flash flooding but
isolated flash flooding not out of the question. Additionally,
cannot rule out gusty winds with collapsing water loaded cores
as DCAPE values are in the 950-1250 range tomorrow.
Tomorrow night expecting increasing shower activity through the
night as the cold front approaches. Surface based CAPE will be
loss with loss of daytime heating however as the shortwave
approaches elevated instability means the thunderstorm threat
overnight wont be zero. Will keep the mention of isolated
thunderstorms overnight. Once again widespread rainfall isn`t
likely but if you get under a storm there could be some
localized beneficial rainfall.
&&
.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Thursday: The cold front will continue to gradually push
through the region. Models are in general good agreement with
the location of the front across Downeast Thursday morning. The
main question will be for Thursday afternoon on whether there
will be enough instability to produce thunderstorms or not. As
of this update, the upper air model soundings show plenty of
CAPE to sustain thunderstorms, but very weak lapse rates and
weak upper level divergence. However, any showers or
thunderstorms could produce heavy rain with the high PWATs,
thick warm cloud layer, and long skinny CAPE throughout the
column. Confidence is low with the development of thunderstorms,
so did not include enhanced wording.
Thursday night: The cold front should move offshore with the
rest of the rain and thunderstorms exiting Downeast by midnight.
The cool airmass and clearing skies should bring temps down
into the upper 40s for the north. The south should see low temps
in the mid to upper 50s due to the later exiting clouds.
Friday: High pressure should settle in into the area. Expect
mostly sunny skies with temps much closer to normal with mid 70s
in the north and upper 70s in the south. Breezy N winds expected
as well.
&&
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Once the high pressure exits Saturday night, the next cold front
should move into the region on Sunday. This system seems to
intensify and gain speed, so any showers and thunderstorms
should be quick moving. Once the cold front exits Sunday night,
high pressure returns for the rest of the week. Expect temps
near normal.
