.SHORT TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Issued at 405 PM EDT Sat Jul 19 2025

While an earlier MCS has gradually weakened as it pushed SSE through
Illinois, deep convection has developed the south and east of the
remnant MCV on convective outflow boundaries. The most notable
convection has developed, with some backbuilding, into a west-to-
east oriented band over southern IL/IN. Overall system propagation
is to the ESE along an instability gradient, which has resulted in
some training over southern Indiana. Isolated flash flooding is
likely or ongoing across portions of Dubois, Crawford, and northern
Perry counties.

The expectation is for additional scattered strong storms to develop
and move southeast across most of central KY from mid-afternoon
through late evening. Moderate instability is noted (2500 J/kg
MLCAPE) across central KY south and east of the convective cold
pool. Effective deep shear gradually increases to 20-30 kts into the
evening hours, with relatively weaker shear further south away from
the mid-level wave to the north. Multicellular clusters will pose a
risk for extremely heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and gusty
(likely sub-severe) winds. The primary and most likely hazard will
be isolated excessive rainfall and flooding. Localized flash
flooding will be possible in any areas that see training storms.

Thunderstorms are likely to weaken and gradually diminish mid to
late evening, with much quieter conditions expected overnight. Some
isolated activity could try to spill southeast from central IN
through portions of southern IN and north-central KY/Bluegrass
Region. For the most part, however, drier conditions will linger
through the Sunday morning hours.

For Sunday, upper level ridging will remain anchored over the
Southeast with WNW flow aloft. A hot, extremely humid airmass will
remain in place with PW near 2 inches and sfc dewpoints in the mid
70s. The first half of the day should stay fairly dry, but cannot
rule out an isolated shower in the moist environment. With drier
conditions and partly to mostly sunny skies, temperatures are likely
to warm quickly into the upper 80s and lower 90s Sunday. Highs in
the low to mid 90s are possible west of I-65. With high humidity,
heat indices will peak in the 100-108 range Sunday afternoon. Will
go ahead and issue a Heat Advisory for roughly the western half of
the forecast area, where the highest heat indices are anticipated.

Widely scattered showers and storms look possible by the afternoon
hours, with the possibility of a larger convective complex
developing over central and southern Indiana Sunday evening. This
activity would then likely track southeast through portions of
central and eastern KY into early Monday.

There is some concern for a swath of very heavy rainfall, perhaps 2-
4 inches, over southern IN and central KY Sunday evening into early
Monday. Uncertainty remains on exactly where the heaviest axis of
rainfall sets up, so will hold off on a Flood Watch for now.
However, a Flood Watch will likely be needed at some point for
Sunday evening and overnight.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Issued at 405 PM EDT Sat Jul 19 2025

Monday through Tuesday Night...

Monday and Tuesday continue to look hot and humid with episodic
showers and storms. The center of the mid-level ridge retrogrades
westward over the Gulf states, while upper level ridging amplifies
over the central Plains and MS Valley. The resulting NW flow aloft
pattern will leave the door wide open for MCS activity to dive into
the region from the Midwest. At least one round of strong convection
looks possible both Monday and Tuesday, and each will pose a threat
for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and abundant lightning.

Wednesday through Friday Night...

The mid-level ridge is expected to build over the Ohio Valley
Wednesday and Thursday, which will bring even hotter (and still
humid) conditions to central KY and southern IN. Highs in the low to
mid 90s are likely, with peak heat indices above 100-105 at times.
There will be an elevated risk for heat illnesses. By the end of
next week, the upper ridge is expected to weaken somewhat, allowing
shower/storm chances to increase. This should also lead to somewhat-
reduced temps, but forecast confidence is lower at this lead time.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z MONDAY/...
Issued at 146 PM EDT Sat Jul 19 2025

TSRA with very heavy rainfall pushing east across southern IN to
begin this forecast period. Scattered TSRA chances will ramp up
across central KY this afternoon, with convection diminishing in
coverage and intensity with sunset. Brief IFR/LIFR conditions
possible in TSRA. Otherwise, prevailing VFR conditions outside of
storms through the evening hours.

Only isolated showers and storms are possible overnight. LEX/RGA and
perhaps SDF could all see a brief shower early Sunday morning, but
prevailing dry/VFR conditions expected. Around and shortly after
sunrise Sunday, MVFR ceilings are likely at LEX and RGA.
