Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
234 PM MDT Sat Jul 19 2025
.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night...Temperatures this
afternoon, behind the "cold" front that crossed our area
earlier, will be leaning a little below normal with lower
elevations reaching the low to mid 90s (80s in mountain valleys.
The forecast is dry through Sunday as near zonal flow aloft
prevails over our area. Temperatures on Sunday will be similar
to that of today, if not a couple degrees cooler. Low relative
humidities and gusty winds Sunday afternoon is leading to an
increased fire weather concern. A Fire Weather Watch has been
issued for our Owyhee Mountain and Southern Highland zones for
Sunday afternoon.
Sunday night, the zonal flow aloft will transition to southwest
flow as a trough digs down off the coast of Washington. This
trough will increase precipitation chances and push another
"cold" front over our area come Monday. Chances of precip
increase around midnight with a 20-30% chance in Baker county.
Chances increase and expand east as the front moves east through
Monday. The greatest likelihood comes Monday afternoon,
generally in eastern Oregon and Valley/Washington/Adams
counties, where the chances range from 20-55%. Weak instability
will build in Monday afternoon allowing for a slight (15-25%)
chance of thunderstorms in the areas mentioned prior.
Precipitation totals will generally be under 0.10 inches, except
for areas of Baker county and northern Valley and Adams
counties, where totals will range from 0.10-0.20 inches. Winds
will be breezy each afternoon. Especially on Monday afternoon,
where an increased pressure gradient will lead to gusts of 25-30
MPH between Boise and Twin Falls. High temperatures behind the
front on Monday will be 5-10 degrees below normal, with the
Snake Plain expected to be in the low to mid 80s.
.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday...Deterministic and
ensemble models are in good agreement regarding the upper-level
pattern beyond Monday. The trough that brought us some
precipitation early in the week will stay stagnant over our
area, before closing off into a low and sitting off the coast of
California on Wednesday. This will keep us under dry Southwest
flow. However, beginning Thursday, there are hints of moisture
making it`s way across our area. This moisture, paired with
model ensembles showing CAPE building in across our area, gives
way to a slight chance of showers/thunderstorms in eastern
Oregon Thursday afternoon. Friday afternoon could have
thunderstorms again, but for now chances are under 15%. Our area
stays under southwest flow come Sunday, as a ridge builds
across the Great Plains. Temperatures start will start at 5-10
degrees below normal on Tuesday, before making it back to near
normal on Wednesday with little daily variations beyond.
