...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...
.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Thursday)
Issued at 214 PM EDT Wed May 21 2025
At a glance:
- Dry conditions quickly filtering in behind the front.
- Cooler drier conditions expected in the short term.
The remnants of the cold front that brought severe weather to most
of the CWA has finally cleared out of our area. Dry conditions and
clearer skies have been hard on it`s heels as winds have turned over
the NW. A lingering CU field associated with the front`s current
location across central Georgia is all that remains of the unsettled
weather of the past twelve hours.
Temperatures and dewpoints will be significantly more comfortable
for the rest of the short term and into the long term. Highs will be
in the 70s and low 80s with overnight lows in the upper 50s and 60s.
Which, for those of you keeping score at home, is a few degrees
below normal. Winds will be a bit gusty today in our post front
environment. NW winds at 10-15 mph could gust as high as 25 mph at
times. Winds are expected calm tonight and into tomorrow as high
pressure assumes control.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday morning through next Tuesday)
Issued at 214 PM EDT Wed May 21 2025
- Quiet in the long term.
- The chances for thunderstorms will return by the end of the
weekend.
The long term picks up with a break from showers and thunderstorms
as high pressure establishes itself over the SE. Some upper level
ridging will keep the flow generally west/northwest which will bring
us a break from the humidity as well. Temps will be a few degrees
below normal and pleasantly in the upper 70s to mid 80s as you head
further south down the CWA. Dewpoints though will be limited to the
50s and even a few day in the 40s which I expect will feel lovely.
As the weekend approaches, the upper level flow shifts back to the
SW and we start to build in moisture as the next impulse pulses
through. As of now, both of the major models want to take that
system through TN limiting storm potential to northern GA, but it`s
a week out and I suspect there will some variation in both location
and timing as the week unfolds. The primary concern with that system
is the potential for it to stall as a stationary front across the SE
which in turn would provide a lift source for however long it
decides to stick with us. This could present both a localized
flooding threat and the potential for severe weather along the
northern most extent of the warm sector.
As of right now, models seem to be zeroing in on central and
northern Georgia as the potential lift zone for showers and
thunderstorms. With lingering dry air aloft across northern GA it
may take some time to rebuild enough instability. We`ll also be
working with a limited shear component due to the nature of the
front. So while we`re growing more confident in the chances for
precip, the intensity still remains a component of uncertainty.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 135 PM EDT Wed May 21 2025
Conditions are rapidly improving as the front clears the area. Winds
have already become firmly NW and are gusting to 25kts. Expect winds
to continue to stay on the NW side at 10-15kts but should
gradually ease after 00Z. A CU field will keep FEW-SCT cloud
coverage through the afternoon at low VFR with conditions becoming
SKC after 18Z.
//ATL Confidence...18Z Update...
High on all elements.
