...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...
.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Saturday)
Issued at 248 PM EDT Fri Apr 11 2025
500mb analysis shows an upper low across southwestern VA with a
longwave through extending back towards the Lower Mississippi River
Valley. The low center and trough will push eastward and offshore
the east coast tonight. NW flow aloft will prevail through the
remainder of the short term period of the forecast.
At the surface, yesterday`s frontal boundary is situated across
portions of the north Florida panhandle. High pressure will build in
from the northwest overnight and into tomorrow.
Regional radar shows scattered showers across much of north GA this
afternoon. The mid level low pressure center and trough are
providing just enough lift for a widespread cu field and the
showers. With some modest surface instability and lapse rates,
cannot rule out isolated thunderstorms. Small hail reports will be
likely. The clouds and showers/thunderstorms should diminish with
the loss of heating.
Clearing conditions expected by early tomorrow morning. Frequent
gusts to around 20kt possible tomorrow. Suspect the dewpoints could
be lower than currently forecast with the gusty NW
winds/downsloping.

.LONG TERM...
(Sunday morning through next Thursday)
Issued at 248 PM EDT Fri Apr 11 2025
Most of the long-term remains uneventful until a week from now on
Thursday into Friday. The deep low pressure system will have pushed
off to the east into the Atlantic by Sunday as northwest flow in the
upper levels continues into Monday. Sfc high pressure will also
build in on Monday ahead of an approaching cold front from the
northwest. This front pushes southward on Tuesday which will again
bring temperatures into the upper 30s to mid 40s by Wednesday
morning. Looking at the ensembles PWATs they are pretty low for this
time of year and with the upper level low displaced well north of
the front, not expecting much in the way of rainfall. Very low end
pops are in extreme north GA for this time frame.
High pressure then builds in again for Wednesday which will allow
for temps to build into the mid to upper 70s which will be just
slightly above normal (+3.0) for this time of year. For Thursday our
next system comes into the area with PoPs being introduced currently
overnight into Friday morning. Current ensemble spread is pretty
wide when it comes to timing though and has pops showing up for
Thursday and into Saturday. Timing will be better refined as we get
into the long term. As timing is refined we will get a better idea
of the frontal passage timing which will contribute to lows in the
30s for north Georgia.
