.KEY MESSAGES...
1. A storm system may impact the region Wednesday night through
Thursday afternoon. There is a 50 to 80 percent chance of four
inches or more of snow through the Sierra Nevada, with isolated
chances for up to 6-8 inches of snow at elevations 6000 feet and
above. As such, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for
the Sierra Nevada from 10pm PST Wednesday to 4pm PST Thursday.
2. A stronger storm system may impact the region this weekend
with a 40 to 80 percent chance of ten inches or more of snow for
the Sierra Nevada above 6000 feet from Friday night through
Sunday. There is a 35 to 75 percent probability of a quarter of
an inch of rainfall for the San Joaquin Valley from late Friday
night into Sunday morning.

.DISCUSSION...
Visibilities have improved throughout the San Joaquin Valley
this morning, and as such the Dense Fog Advisory has been lifted
for all areas. Right now, probabilities of quarter-mile
visibilities tonight through tomorrow morning have dropped down
to 10-20 percent, so dense fog formation tomorrow is not
supported at the moment. Additionally, the very cold minimum
temperatures seen in particular by rural southwest valley
locations will warm up to normal. High temperatures throughout
the forecast area are expected to hover around normal through
the end of the week and into early next week.
The first of a series of troughs will slide down into the area
from the Pacific Northwest, changing the stagnant weather
pattern to unsettled for the next week or so. This first system
will bring rain to the valley and snow to the mountains
Wednesday night through Thursday afternoon. Snow levels will
start out low, around 3500 feet, before rising to 5500 feet and
staying there through the duration of the event. Most areas will
see 2-4 inches of snow; however, areas 6000 feet and above could
see 6-8 inches of snow. Additionally, higher snow totals are now
expected in more southern areas of the Sierra. A Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for the Sierra Nevada from 10pm PST
Wednesday to 4pm PST Thursday, with southern zones covering
Fresno and Tulare counties added onto the initial advisory from
yesterday. This system will also bring rain to the San Joaquin
Valley, with northern counties expecting to see a quarter to
half inch of rain and those totals lowering as you go southward.
The second trough will slide back down again with little
recovery time, though this second storm will have a longer
duration and bring higher snow totals to the region than the
first storm. This storm will impact the area late Friday night
into Sunday morning. In terms of rain, much of the valley will
see roughly the same or lower amounts of precipitation and has a
35 to 75 percent chance of seeing a quarter inch of rainfall.
However, snow totals will be higher with this second storm than
the first, with a 40 to 80 percent chance of 10 inches of snow
or more for the Sierra Nevada. This snow will fall over roughly
the same amount of area as the previous storm: from Yosemite
National Park down to southern Tulare County. With these snow
totals, expect to see another winter headline in the form of a
Winter Weather Advisory or Winter Storm Watch with this second
system as well.
While the weather pattern will remain unsettled through the
beginning of next week with some additional light snowfall
through late Monday evening, things will settle back down by the
middle of the week. The Climate Prediction Centers 6-10 and
8-14 Day Outlooks have us trending to below normal chances of
precipitation.
&&
.AVIATION...
Now that visibility has improved, KFAT and KMCE will see IFR to
MVFR categories throughout the day due to haze, and will slowly
improve. KBFL is set to see VFR visibilities throughout the
day, sometimes dropping to MVFR as haze occurs. KVIS is
currently seeing LIFR conditions but will improve to IFR and
then MVFR as the day continues.
High Sierra/Foothills north of Kings Canyon AFT 06Z will see
deteriorating conditions as precipitation moves into the region.
Kern County Desert remains VFR for the 24 hour period.
