AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
1209 AM PST Thu Jan 15 2026
.SYNOPSIS...High pressure is forecast to remain over NW California
through the weekend resulting in dry weather and generally above
normal daytime temperatures. Overnight and morning temperatures will
remain chilly with night and morning fog in the river valleys.
&&
.DISCUSSION...An upper level ridge has situated itself over the West
Coast leading to large scale subsidence and adiabatic warming.
Anomalous interior warmth with temperatures much above
climatological norms will continue under the strong ridge. With
clear skies and exceptional longwave cooling, it will continue to
remain cold in the river valleys each night and morning,
especially in northern Humboldt, Trinity and northern Mendo
through the end of this week. Some fog is observed in the interior
river valleys of Trinity, Humboldt and northern Mendo. The ridge
aloft is not forecast to breakdown anytime soon and will continue
to provide dry and stable weather conditions for NW California
through the weekend.
The anomalous interior January warmth is contributing to a strong
inverted trough and strengthening northeasterly winds, especially
over the ridges. The most focused area of stronger northeasterly
winds will be over the ridges Del Norte and Lake counties. This
setup is also favorable for warmer coastal temperatures.
The offshore flow is greatly reducing the chances for coastal stratus
and fog. Models do depict and southerly wind reversal to snake
stratus northward over the coastal waters today, and perhaps
alongside/over the coastal areas at times.
Chances for the ridge to weaken or breakdown do not increase until
mid next week. Probabilities for meaningful rainfall over 0.1 inch do
not increase until late next week and next weekend. After another
prolonged stretch of dry weather, wet weather will likely return for
the latter part of January for NW CA.
&&
.AVIATION...Calm winds promote misty conditions along the north
coast tonight. Fog is forecast to settle by 11Z over KACV before
dissipating out around 16-18Z. KCEC will experience LLT with winds
aloft up to 30kts out of the east. Inland valleys will remain VFR
with calm winds with a few exceptions in the Klamath, Eel, and
Trinity river valleys.
&&
.MARINE...Northerly winds have filled in with the strongest winds
are constrained to the outer waters, particularly north of Cape
Mendocino, where gale force gusts are possible. Nearshore winds are
much lighter, but some propagation of steep seas into the inner
waters are possible. Along with steep wind waves, there will be a
long-period west swell filling in today at around 7 ft at 16 seconds
along with the existing decaying west swells. Winds begin to ease
and seas begin to subside late Thursday and Friday. Light winds and
subdued seas of 2-4 ft are likely Saturday and most of Sunday. JB
