Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
1255 PM PST Wed Nov 27 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
Most of the precipitation associated with a weakening atmospheric
river has ended, with some light drizzle possible in the mountains
through the afternoon. Widespread cloudy and cooler weather prevails
today before a slow warming and drying trend sets in for the latter
half of the week with weak offshore winds. By Saturday,
temperatures return above normal with the warmth lingering into
early next week.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Satellite shows clouds clearing out from north to south as moisture
from an associated atmospheric river is pushed out and zonal flow
aloft builds in over Southern California. With the departure of the
moisture, dew points fall to the teens and 20s tonight for areas
east and north of the mountains, resulting in chilly overnight
temperatures near freezing for the High Deserts. One last shot of
fog and low clouds will build in tonight along the coast and far
western valleys, but will quickly dissipate Thursday morning as weak
offshore winds develop, ushering in dryer air to the region.
Afternoon temperatures warm a few degrees under the zonal flow, but
generally remain stagnate due to the lackluster northeast winds
prevailing through Friday. Weak upper level ridging starts to build
back in on Saturday and temperatures this weekend, while still
expected to be above normal, have cooled a few degrees over previous
forecast packages. This is mainly due to the upper low off the West
Coast, which will move into California and become an open trough,
looking a bit more put together compared to previous model runs.
Despite the change, confidence in any precipitation associated with
this system remains very low, although a shower or two in the
mountains where orographic lift comes into play is not out of the
question. For now, have forgone with any mention of precipitation
this weekend in the forecast as the ridge looks to keep things a bit
too dry. Regardless, cloud cover associated with the low will keep
temperatures a bit more mild, mainly 60s-70s for the coasts,
valleys, and High Desert, with 50s-60s for the mountains, and mainly
70s for the lower deserts both Saturday and Sunday.
As the low moves out, a second and more established one fills in
behind it, reaching the coast of Central California by Tuesday. For
now this next system looks to remain offshore and dry, with above
normal temperatures prevailing through at least the middle of next
week. As such, prepare for warm and dry weather to reign for the
foreseeable future.
