Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
1251 AM PDT Mon May 12 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Strong winds return again today with impacts to travel and
  recreation.

* Cool temperatures with light mountain snow and valley rain
showers arrive today and Tuesday. Temperatures will then trend
upward to near average by the second half of the week.

* Gusty winds and chances for rain showers return for next
  weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

* Strong winds impacted the region on Sunday, with gusts upwards
of 80-100 mph along the Sierra crests and 60-70+ mph in wind
prone areas across western NV, northeast CA, and down into Mono
County. We`ll have a temporary reprieve in the strong winds for
most lower elevations through the early morning, followed by
increasing gusts later this morning through the evening. While
not as strong as Sunday, we`ll still manage gusts upwards of
30-50 mph in most areas today with stronger gusts of 60-80 mph
along the Sierra crests. Expect adverse driving conditions,
especially for high profile vehicles along with dangerous
boating conditions for all area lakes.

* In addition to gusty conditions, high-resolution model solutions
and the HREF show light showers with snow above 6,000` starting
by around 5 am in western Lassen. Showers spread south and east
across the remainder of the area later today through Tuesday
with snow levels around 6,500-7,000`. By early Tuesday, snow
levels will fall to as low as 5,000`, so don`t be surprised to
see some snow in the foothills. But, the warm antecedent
conditions will limit any significant accumulations on the roads
below 7,000`. Also, with cold air aloft and minor instability,
there is a 15-25% chance for lightning today and Tuesday.
Otherwise, today and Tuesday will be cool late spring days as
highs struggle to reach 60 degrees in western NV, northeast CA
and lower elevations of Mono County. The eastern Sierra
communities will struggle to reach the upper 40s, which is 10-15
  degrees below average.

* This current system will move out of the area by Wednesday with
a gradual warming trend. High temperatures return to average by
Thursday through the weekend. Long term ensembles show yet
another system moving into the area by Saturday and Sunday,
bringing another slight 20% chance of showers, gusty winds, and
  a slight cooldown. -McKellar

.AVIATION...

Mountain wave turbulence and LLWS continue through the evening.
At the surface, S/SW winds sustained 20-30 kts with gusts of
30-45 kts for all Sierra and western NV terminals by the late
morning. Ridge-top wind gusts may reach 70-80 kts through early
evening, then slowly decline through the evening.

Precipitation will make its way into western Lassen County by
early morning, then eventually into the Tahoe Basin by late
morning. Areas of IFR/MVFR in precipitation and mountain
obscurations likely into KSVE/KTRK/KTVL, lower chances in Mono
County. Snow may mix in at times as low as 5000-5500 ft msl
tonight-Tuesday AM, but accumulations remain unlikely due to warm
antecedent conditions.

Showers and a 15-25% chance of thunderstorms will move toward the
southeast by Tuesday for Tahoe/KRNO/KCXP/KMEV/KMMH. -McKellar
