Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
224 AM PDT Wed Oct 15 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Light snow continues through the early morning in the Sierra
with periods of rain for lower elevations.

* Below average temperatures continue through this week with drier
  weather later in the week.

* Another chance for valley rain and mountain snow may arrive by
  late this weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

* The upper level low pressure that produced rain and higher
elevation snow Monday and Tuesday will exit the region by the
afternoon. Light, scattered snow showers will persist until
around 7-9 AM PDT in Mono County and the Tahoe basin. A more
persistent band of light to moderate snowfall will continue in
eastern Plumas and southern Lassen counties through the same
time frame. Local camera networks are showing snow levels as low
as lake level in Tahoe, to round 6,000` in Mono County. Snow
levels will be around 5,500-6,500` through around 11 AM, then
increase to around 7,500` the remainder of the day. Where we do
see snow this morning, additional accumulations of 1-3 inches is
likely (60-70%), with a low chance (10%) for locally higher
amounts of 4-5". Snow rates will be 0.5" per hour or less.

* Currently in western NV, light rain showers continue for
Mineral, southern Lyon, and Douglas counties northward through
the greater Reno metro area. A band of light to moderate rain
continues in central Washoe into Pershing County north of I-80.
Otherwise, the rest of western NV is dry. These showers will
continue through the around 8-10 AM for far western NV, to
around 10-12 PM in the inner-basins. Snow levels this morning
may fall to as low as 5,500-6,000`, with light snow
  accumulations of at best 1-2".

* For the remainder of the work-week into Saturday, a ridge of
high pressure moves into the region. This will allow for a
warming and drying trend through at least Saturday, with
moderate to high confidence. By the end of the weekend,
ensembles show the ridge breaking down. After that, there is
considerable uncertainty in if we get a trough, ridge, or just
  zonal flow. -McKellar

&&

.AVIATION...

* MVFR/IFR in light to moderate snow showers through around
14-16z for all eastern Sierra terminals. Rates will be generally
0.5" or less per hour, and accumulations will be at most 1-2"
  of wet snow.

* MVFR/IFR in light rain until around 15-17z for KRNO/KCXP/KMEV.
These conditions are present at KLOL/KNFL from roughly 11-18z
  this morning.

* Otherwise, mountain obscurations and light winds can be expected
for all main terminals through around 00z. -McKellar
