.KEY MESSAGES...
* Warm and dry weather will round out the holiday weekend with
increased breezes this evening.
* There is a slight chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms in
the Sierra and northeast California on Wednesday.
* Near record warmth and moderate HeatRisk is increasingly likely
from midweek onward.

.DISCUSSION...
Transient high pressure aloft continues to produce very warm, fair
weather areawide as we celebrate Memorial Day weekend. A weak upper
trough will quickly traverse the region tonight into Monday,
promoting some increased breezes this evening, more cloud cover
overnight, and providing about 5 degrees of cooling for Memorial
Day.
The weather pattern will evolve into a pronounced Rex Block
configuration late this week, characterized by unseasonably strong
high pressure over the PacNW and a cut-off low east of the Baja
Peninsula. While this is a dry weather pattern, afternoon showers
and thunderstorms are possible Tuesday and Wednesday in the Sierra
into NE CA, but best chances (10-20%) will favor the Sierra crest
south of Tahoe on Wednesday.
Of greater concern is the prospect of seeing our first taste of
summer from midweek onward as 80 and 90 degree heat becomes common
for Sierra communities and western Nevada valleys, respectively.
For context, this is much more typical of July heat than it is
late May. Early guidance suggests that we`ll remain a few degrees
shy of record highs throughout this heat episode, but it could
come close Friday and/or Saturday which look to be the hottest
days. Minor to moderate HeatRisk will develop by Wednesday,
becoming mostly moderate Friday and Saturday. With summer just
around the corner, this is a good opportunity to practice heat
safety tips such as staying hydrated, limiting time in the heat,
and wearing light-colored clothing.

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions and light afternoon breezes will prevail this week,
although some gusts near 25 kt are projected at the main terminals
through this evening. A significant warm-up at the end of the
week may present density altitude issues into next weekend.
