Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
116 PM PDT Sun May 25 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Other than isolated showers this afternoon in Lincoln
County, dry conditions will persist through much of the upcoming
week. Breezy winds are possible at times, with the strongest winds
expected on Memorial Day. Temperatures will remain above normal and
slowly climb each day through the week.
&&
.SHORT TERM...through Tuesday night. Early afternoon satellite loop
showed scattered flat cumulus over our CWA, with the greatest
coverage and vertical development over eastern Lincoln County, where
lifted indices had fallen to -2. Surface obs showed southwesterly
winds gusting up to 30 mph and temperatures similar to slightly
warmer than 24 hours ago. The mean ridge position was entering the
western CWA this afternoon and will traverse the region through
early morning on Memorial Day, bringing generally quiet weather. The
next trough was crossing 130W this afternoon and will reach the West
Coast on Memorial Day. This trough is moisture starved, so rain is
not a concern. Its main effect on our CWA will be to kick up the
southerly winds on Memorial Day. These winds will remain below
advisory criteria, but anyone who will be out on the lakes should
use extra caution. As the trough axis moves over our area on
Tuesday, winds will decrease. Meanwhile, high pressure will quickly
build to the north, setting up a slow-moving blocking pattern.
Temperatures will warm slightly on Memorial Day and again on Tuesday.
.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday.
A cut-off low will approach the southern Californian coast on
Wednesday, settling somewhere off the coast of southern California/
the Baja Peninsula during the second half of the week. While this
system approaches and settles off the coast, a ridge of high
pressure will build over the western US, resulting in an upper-level
pattern resembling a Rex Block. Confidence is high regarding hotter
than normal temperatures during the second half of the week, as even
the 10th percentile of the maximum temperature distribution is
sitting at or above normal through the end of the week. However,
just how hot we end up getting will be dependent on the amplitude of
the upper-level ridge. The exact location of the cut-off low and
when the cut-off low moves inland also contribute to forecast
uncertainty in the long term.
&&
.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Winds at
the terminal are expected to be lighter than yesterday, but a
persistent easterly component could cause concerns through the
afternoon. South to southwest winds under 10 knots are expected
overnight, increasing Monday afternoon with gusts of 20 to 25 knots.
VFR conditions through the period.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 18Z Forecast Package...Lighter winds are
expected this afternoon than yesterday, aside from westerly gusts of
25 to 30 knots pushing through the Barstow area late this afternoon.
Isolated showers and possibly a thunderstorm will develop over
northeast Lincoln County this afternoon, with the main threat being
erratic gusty winds. Elsewhere, VFR conditions are expected. For
Monday, south to southwest winds gusting 15 to 30 knots are expected
over most of the region, with VFR conditions likely areawide.
&&
.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report
any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating
procedures.
