.KEY MESSAGES...

* Another round of widespread light-to-moderate precipitation will
  move across the region today and tomorrow.

* Another round of snow is expected in the Sierra and White
  Mountains today through Friday. The Spring Mountains will also see
  snow with this round of precipitation.

* Things will dry out over the weekend with temperatures returning
  to normal as we keep our eye on another system poised to impact
  the region around mid-week.

.DISCUSSION...through New Year`s Eve.

The next round of precipitation is currently moving into the eastern
Sierra and Owens Valley, bringing rainfall to low elevations and
snowfall to the White Mountains and Sierra. This plume of moisture
and associated precipitation will continue to move east through
tonight and tomorrow. However, rainfall totals should be much
lighter compared to Christmas Eve and flooding is less of a concern.
Meanwhile, elevated southerly to southeasterly winds persist across
much of the area with gusts generally in the 20 to 30 mph range for
most locations. Wind gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range remain possible
in the southern Great Basin, southern Mohave County, and the Morongo
Basin and a Wind Advisory remains in effect for these areas through
10 PM PST/11 PM MST this evening.

Another point of interest with the ongoing system is snow. SNOTEL
sensors above 9500 feet in the Eastern Sierra are reporting 2 to 3
feet of snow so far, and trained spotters reported 18 inches of snow
in Aspendell as of this morning. Additional snow accumulation is
expected in the Eastern Sierra and White Mountains through tonight
and tomorrow as snow levels fall to 5000 to 6000 feet in elevation.
Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through 4 PM PST Friday. The
plume of moisture responsible for this precipitation will develop a
southwesterly direction and take aim at the Spring Mountains on
Friday and Friday night. Favorable upslope flow should be enough to
produce between 6 and 10 inches of snow in Kyle and Lee Canyons.
Snow totals will highly depend on how fast the snow levels will
decrease through the event. Issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the
Spring Mountains above 7500 feet since confidence in impactful snow
accumulations is highest above this elevation.

Cool and dry conditions return this weekend as the low pressure
system tracks east and scours out any remaining moisture from the
area. Temperatures return to seasonal values through the middle of
next week, which for Las Vegas means highs in the mid 50s and lows
in the upper 30s. The next weather system may arrive in time for the
New Year, but confidence is low at this time.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Winds
through much of the period will favor a southerly to south-
southwesterly direction, with sustained speeds around 10-12KT
early in the period with gusts to 15-20KT expected to diminish
after sunset. Thereafter through mid morning, winds are expected
to be around 6-8KT, with increasing clouds and ceilings becoming
SCT-BKN around 7-15kft overnight. Another round of showers is
expected to move into the Las Vegas Valley by mid to late morning,
first across the higher terrain where terrain obscurations are
likely in clouds and snow, then expanding across lower elevations
mid afternoon onward. The most likely window for impacts at the
terminal is currently mid afternoon through mid evening, with BKN
ceilings around 4-5kft and visibility around 6SM possible in
heavier showers. Gusty south-southwesterly winds also return on
Friday, similar to today with gusts to around 20KT expected.


For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...The unsettled pattern
continues across the region, with heavy snow continuing over the
Sierra and White Mountains, with spillover rain showers in the
Owens Valley through tonight. Ceilings in heavier showers will
drop to 2-3kft, but will otherwise hover around 7kft with
increasing cloud cover areawide through tonight. Precipitation
will slowly spread eastward into southern Nevada Friday morning
into Friday afternoon with snow expected above 7kft and rain at
lower elevations. Elevated and intermittently gusty winds this
afternoon will diminish overnight for all but the Owens Valley/BIH
where gusty southeasterly winds are expected through daybreak.
Elsewhere, excluding the western Mojave where winds favor a
westerly direction, winds generally remain southerly to
southwesterly with some variability, with gusts to 15-25KT
returning for most locations by early Friday afternoon.
