.UPDATE...

Forecast surface winds will remain breezy from the north-
northeast this morning across the Basin and Range. Surface winds,
however, are not expected to exceed lake wind advisory criteria.
Therefore, the lake wind advisory in effect was ended. Be advised
that choppy lake surface conditions could continue through the
morning. -Amanda

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION... /issued 127 AM PDT Fri Apr 18 2025/

KEY MESSAGES...

* Breezy northerly winds will continue cool and dry conditions
  through today.

* Warmer weather returns for Easter weekend that extends over much
of next week with mainly dry conditions and afternoon west breezes.

* Look for gradual cooling with increased shower chances by later
  next week.

DISCUSSION...

A secondary shot of cooler air spread south and east northerly
flow aloft behind a follow-on upper short wave that passed east
and south across western NV-Great Basin earlier this morning. If
this mornings lows seemed a bit on the chilly, youre not
imagining anything. Tightened northerly gradients, reinforced by a
100+ kt jet core, ensured the flow of cooler below average air
filtered across much of the western NV. Only areas across
northeast CA were mostly spared the below average drop in
temperatures regionally. Winds will remain mostly breezy from the
northwest north of Highway-50 through this afternoon. Gusty
northerly winds will continue today south of Highway-50. Wind will
generally shift more from the northeast, and subside going into
the evening as gradients loosen with the eastward departure of
upper trough.

An upstream, quick moving short wave ridge axis will then press into
the West Coast overnight into Saturday. This will not only bring
drier conditions to the region, but also a quick turn-around in
temperatures across much of the region. Daytime highs will push into
the 60s for Sierra locations, and low 70s for much of western NV.
Blended guidance also shows temperatures slowly warming through mid-
week with above average daytime highs 5-10 degrees above seasonal
averages with morning lows still dropping in the 30s and 40s. Easter
weekend celebrations, however, will be accompanied with abundant
sunshine, and warmer above average daytime highs in the 60s and 70s.
A couple of weakly forced, quick moving short wave troughs will
scrape across the northern portions of CA-NV through Monday-Tuesday.
These features will increase the likelihood of westerly afternoon
breezes with Sunday afternoon seeing more enhanced breezes.

Ensemble multi-model and cluster guidance now show troughing once
again deepening over the Eastern Pacific late next week. This will
bring about increased shower chances, cooler temperatures, and gusty
southwest winds next weekend. Ensemble simulations will of course
continue to struggle with timing and magnitude projections this far
out in the forecast. -Amanda

AVIATION...

VFR conditions prevail across the region through this weekend.
North-northeast winds gusting 15-20 kts are projected at most main
terminals (except mainly northwest at KMMH) through this evening.
Lighter winds are expected for the main terminals, except for late
day west breezes with gusts 15-20 kt Saturday and possibly up to 25
kt Sunday afternoon. -Amanda
