.KEY MESSAGES...
1. A storm system is expected to impact the region through this
afternoon. There is a 50 to 80 percent chance of six inches of
snow in the Sierra Nevada above 6,000 feet, with isolated
chances for up to 8-10 inches of snow. A Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for the Sierra Nevada until 4 PM this
afternoon.
2. A stronger storm system is expected to impact the region this
weekend with a 40 to 80 percent chance of 12 inches of snow for
the Sierra Nevada above 6000 feet from Saturday morning through
Sunday afternoon. There is a 35 to 75 percent chance for a
quarter of an inch of rainfall for the San Joaquin Valley from
Saturday morning through Sunday morning.

.DISCUSSION...
A low pressure system has begun impacting northern California
and will begin to impact Central California later this morning.
This system is expected to bring in light precipitation to the
region, with 6 to 10 inches of snow forecast to fall in the
Sierra Nevada above 6,000 feet through the afternoon today. A
Winter Weather Advisory in currently in effect for the Sierra
Nevada from the Sequoia NP northward. The San Joaquin Valley
is also expecting rain with this system. Current probabilities
for a quarter inch of rain or more in the valley are 35 to 65
percent, increasing as you go north. Temperatures are expected
to cool down today as the system passes, due to the cold front
associated with the low pressure.
Friday will see a short stint of ridging over the southwest
before a stronger trough is expected to dive into the region
over this weekend. This system is currently forecast to generate
more precipitation for the Sierra Nevada, with current
probabilities of 12 inches of snow at 40 to 80 percent for the
mountains above 6,000 feet from Saturday through Sunday. There
is also a 35 to 75 percent chance for a quarter of an inch of
rainfall for the San Joaquin Valley from Saturday morning
through Sunday morning.
After the second trough moves to the east by Sunday night, a
much weaker trough is expected to brush to top of our CWA,
where it may bring very light precipitation to Merced and
Mariposa Counties, and the mountainous portion of Fresno county,
leaving the rest of the region relatively dry.
Looking into the medium term forecast, ridging is expected to
take over for a few days after the Monday trough, where the
region will remain dry and a warming trend is expected to begin
Tuesday and run through the next weekend with a high pressure
ridge taking over from the slew of troughs that are expected to
run through the region over the next several days.
Long term ensemble models are indicating another trough may dive
down into Central California a few days before Christmas, though
the uncertainty is high due to about half the ensemble members
seeing precipitation and the other half seeing continued dry
weather. Confidence is likely to increase as the event gets
closer.
