Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
915 PM PDT Thu May 22 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Cooler with a deepening marine layer Friday into the weekend.
There will periods of stronger and gusty southwest to west winds
for the mountains and deserts during the afternoons and evenings
through Sunday. Areas of night and morning marine layer clouds
continue into the middle of next week with highs near seasonal
normals.
&&
.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Evening update...
Areas of low clouds are lingering along the immediate coast this
evening. The 00Z KNKX sounding has a marine inversion based near
1900 ft MSL, around 700 ft higher than this morning. With a deeper
marine layer in place, expect little to no dense fog tonight into
Friday morning except where the marine layer intersects terrain in
the valleys. Otherwise breezy west winds gusting to 30-40 mph
below the passes will weaken overnight. Friday will be cooler with
highs around 3-6 degrees above normal. Slightly stronger west
winds will occur in the mountains and deserts Friday afternoon and
evening with gusts to around 55 mph below the passes.
Previous discussion...
Winds will continue to diminish going into the early hours on Sunday
as the trough continues to pull away from the region. There will be
an overall area of troughing over the northwestern region, and
possibly a weak upper level low transitioning over California during
the early part of next week, which could help to reinforce some
cooler temperatures and allow for a slight chance of precipitation.
Otherwise, generally it will remain cooler and more moist with a
persistent onshore flow in place through the middle of next week.
&&
.AVIATION...
230330Z...Coast...Low clouds based at 800-1400 feet MSL have moved
offshore this evening; are expected to return 05-07z tonight for

3 SM for higher coastal slopes and inland valleys; highest
confidence between 09-14z. 40% chance CIGs reach KONT and 20% at
KSBD. Clearing Friday morning around 17-18z. Low clouds return
Friday evening, 00-02z, with higher bases 1500-2000 feet MSL.
Elsewhere...Clear with unrestricted VIS through Friday morning.
Strong west winds over mountains, passes and desert slopes with
gusts locally to 35-50 kts Friday afternoon.
