AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
457 AM PDT Sat May 3 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Much cooler with strong and blustery northerly to
northwesterly winds and a few showers today. Continued cool and
windy with strong coastal northerlies again on Sunday. Robust
northeast winds and warming expected for Monday. Dry weather and
above normal interior warmth expected all next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Upper trough inside 130W slowly progressing eastward
will move over NW California this morning and then develop into
a closed low this afternoon. Shower activity has been confined to
mostly NE Trinity overnight with a few CG strikes into the early
morning hours along the periphery of NE Trinity. Shallow push of
moist air intersecting the coastal terrain has resulted in some
light with amounts less than a tenth so far. Cooling aloft with
the trough will maintain weak instability and shower activity over
the interior mountains into this afternoon. A few wrap around
showers may occur over the eastern fringes of Lake into early this
evening as the closed low meanders southward over central
California. Drier air and clearer skies tonight should make for a
good set up for longwave cooling in the interior valleys if winds
go calm. Frost will be possible, especially in Trinity and
portions of eastern Humboldt and northern Mendocino. We will post
a probability graphic for min temps < 37F to highlight the
locations with the greatest risk for frost. There is even a chance
for freezing temperatures in a few of the high mountain valleys,
specifically Hayfork and Ruth in southern Trinity.
Main impacts following the passage of this trough will be strong
and gusty northerly to northwesterly winds today. NBM means has
gusts up to 25-35 mph with windier points around 40-45 mph. A few
wind prone sites could gust to 50 mph in the afternoon/evening;
over the King Range, around Pt St George, Cape Mendocino and Pt
Arena. Once again we will post a graphic to highlight these windy
conditions. Blustery conditions in the interior is expected as
well. High temps will be chilly today, in the lower to mid 60s.
Strong and gusty coastal northerlies are expected to continue on
Sunday. Northerlies will be a tad stronger for the North Coast as
pressure gradients tighten between an offshore ridge and surface
low pressure over the interior. Peak gusts around > 45 mph are
highly probable for the coastal headlands and ridges.
A 925mb speed max (35-45kt) will form over the central valley
Sunday night into Monday. Robust N-NE winds are expected over the
higher elevations, especially eastern Mendocino and eastern Lake
Counties by early Monday. Peak gusts for the ridges and wind prone
areas will probably reach or exceed 50 mph. Windy conditions
expected to continue on Monday, but will most likely diminish for
coastal areas as the air mass warms and stability increases.
High temperatures in the interior will warm above seasonal
averages on Monday and probably remain above average on Tue.
Highs may reach or exceed 90F at Ukiah as a thermal trough
develops and 850mb increase to 15-18C. Robust offshore flow will
initially keep coastal stratus limited in coverage and duration or
non-existent Monday and probably into Tuesday.
Upper ridge axis over the PAC NW is forecast to shift southward
around mid week. Precip chances remain low (<5%) as a trough over
the Gulf of Alaska digs southward over the central Pacific. Near
shore southerly wind reversals may result in stratus by mid week.
Also a decaying front may bring a shallow push of moist air and a
few hundredths of coastal drizzle Wed-Thu. Interior temps should
trend down some mid week, and then warm up again late week. DB
&&
.AVIATION...Ceilings have generally lifted early this morning as
winds increase and a weak front moves to the east. Occasional MVFR
ceilings are possible at the coastal terminals this morning as light
rain showers continue, but VFR conditions are expected by the
afternoon. Gusty northwest winds are forecast at all terminals, with
the highest winds this afternoon. LLWS is possible at ACV and UKI
this morning as the strongest gusts may not mix down to the surface.
VFR conditions are likely to continue through the night. JB
&&
.MARINE...Northerlies have increased early this morning behind a
weak front. These will continue to increase through the day, peaking
with Gale Force gusts of 35 to 40 kts in the afternoon. Gales
continue into Monday, with the strongest gusts in the afternoon and
evening. Very steep, chaotic seas of around 12-15 ft at 10 seconds
will be associated with these winds. Winds begin to ease Tuesday,
and continue to gradually ease into the middle of next week. JB
