AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
354 AM PDT Thu Apr 17 2025
.SYNOPSIS...Coastal clouds, seasonal temperatures and mostly dry
weather expected into early next week. A warming trend will bring
high temperatures at or slightly above climatological norms.
Expect periods of breezy afternoon northerly winds this weekend and
next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...An upper trough will dive into the Great Basin region
today, then proceeding into the Four Corners region through the
weekend. A NE Pacific ridge will nose in as the trough passes.
This will result in a slight warning trend through the weekend,
with daytime highs in the interior valleys reaching to mid to
upper 70s, with some movement into the 80s likely. The coast will
see low to upper 60`s outside of the stratus coverage. The coastal
stratus will be much less prevalent as northerly winds increase
over the weekend. The pressure gradient will increase as a mostly
dry front approaches from the NW on Saturday. A few light terrain
enhanced showers or some coastal drizzle may occur Saturday as the
front passes.
Northerly winds will gust from 25 to over 35 mph along the ridges
and coastal headlands Saturday and Sunday afternoon. NBM holds at
60% chance for wind gusts over 35 mph out at Point St. George
Saturday afternoon, and a 40% chance for gusts over 40 mph Sunday
afternoon. NBM has moderate to high chances for the ridges and
headlands to see gusts over 30 mph Saturday afternoon and
especially Sunday afternoon. And up to moderate probabilities for
similar afternoon gusts carry through Tuesday of next week before
chances lower mid to late next week when a shortwave trough from
the NW may disrupt the pressure gradient and potentially bring
light precipitation. There is only 30-40% chance for a wetting
rain over 0.1 inch of rainfall. /JJW
&&
.AVIATION...A deep and expansive but generally elevated marine layer
has maintained consistent MVFR conditions throughout the night along
the coast and even for much of the interior including the Russian
River Valley. Stratus will gradually pull back to the coast through
the morning with the interior clearing to VFR conditions. Compared
to the last couple days, high resolution models suggest better
gradual clearing at the coast through the morning. That said,
stratus may prove hard to clear, especially in protected areas like
Humboldt Bay where there is a roughly 30% chance of MVFR all through
the afternoon. A marine layer is most likely to reform again
Thursday night. Building high pressure will reduce its inland extent
but also most likely drop ceiling closer to IFR along the coast
where the layer does form. /JHW
&&
.MARINE...Northerly wind has gradually decreased overnight with
gusts generally falling below 30 kts in all waters. Steep short
period seas have gradually begun to drop as well. By late morning,
winds will most likely be nearly calm along shore with moderate
northerlies pushed into the far outer waters. Short period seas will
gradually fall through the day, though seas up to 6 feet at 6
seconds will remain in the outer waters. Beyond the short period
waves, a minor mid period northwest swell is also impacting the sea
state.
A passing upper level shortwave this weekend will push moderate to
strong northerlies closer to shore once again Saturday through the
weekend. Gale force gusts up to 35 kts are most likely in the outer
waters by Saturday afternoon, helping build steep short period seas
once again. Consistent, strong north wind is most likely to continue
through most of next week. /JHW
