.KEY MESSAGES...
* Light winds and valley inversions will keep hazy skies and air
quality reductions into this weekend, with patchy freezing fog
in some Sierra valleys.
* Breezy to gusty east winds continue for Sierra ridges through
Friday morning.
* Dry weather prevails through the upcoming week with above
average daytime temperatures and typical chilly nights, although
the inversions may finally become weaker next week.

.DISCUSSION...
The current weather regime will continue through the upcoming
week, with dry conditions, areas of haze especially near urban
areas, and above average daytime temperatures. Highs will
generally be in the 50s, although some communities with terrain
less affected by the inversions could warm up to least 60
degrees, especially from this weekend onward. As of yesterday, the
warmest temperatures across the region occurred along the US-6
corridor of southeast Mono County (Chalfant Valley) with 70
degrees even within reach!
Interestingly enough, a different portion of Mono County (around
Mono Lake) continues to be excluded from this warmup due to
persistent freezing fog, with highs remaining below 30 degrees.
This fog will more or less continue at least through Friday,
producing poor visibility, patchy slick roads and even deposits of
very light snow. Other areas in close proximity to water sources
(lakes, streams, agricultural areas, etc.) or fog-prone areas
such as the Martis Valley may also continue to see localized
fog/freezing fog in the mornings.
While surface winds remain light, gusty east winds are expected at
times through Friday mainly during the night and morning hours
with gusts up to 45 mph producing some extra chill for backcountry
recreation. These winds are then projected to decrease for the
holiday weekend as the upper level ridge axis lines up close to
the Sierra crest. A light SW-W flow showing up over central Mono
County may help to nudge the freezing fog away from that portion
of US-395 near Mono Lake and allow for some warming during the
afternoons, but with only modest mixing the fog would be poised
to return each night.
Next week shows a potential loosening of the high pressure`s grip
over CA-NV. A west to southwest flow over the Sierra should help
to further weaken the inversions, with an improved chance of
dispersing the persistent Mono Lake freezing fog, although it may
be more toward the later portion of next week before enough mixing
finally arrives to really kick the fog out. Longer range guidance
hints at a storm system moving though the region around next
Thursday-Friday, but it looks to be on the weaker side with
limited moisture. MJD

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions expected for all terminals through the start of the
weekend with light winds at the main terminals. The only
exception will be KTRK where patchy FZFG continues each
night/morning mainly between 08Z-16Z. Increased east winds (up to
40 kts) along ridgetops may produce localized turbulence and
shear over the Sierra this morning and again for tonight. MJD
