Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
110 AM PDT Thu May 15 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Near average temperatures, mostly dry conditions, and light
  breezes will persist through Friday.

* Another weekend storm will impact the Sierra and western Nevada
bringing an increased likelihood of cooler conditions, gusty
winds, rain and mountain snow showers.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

* High pressure will return to the area today through Friday. This
will allow for afternoon high temperatures to increase back to
average for mid-May. We`re looking at readings in the low to
mid-70s for western NV, eastern Lassen, and lower elevations of
Alpine and Mono counties. For the eastern Sierra communities,
highs will generally be in the low to upper 60s. Winds will once
again be light today, with westerly gusts of 15-25 mph by the
afternoon. While most of the area will remain dry the next few
days, far northern Washoe and Pershing counties along with the
Surprise Valley in CA have a slight 20-30% chance for light
showers due to a quick passing wave in the Pacific NW.

* After a quick taste of late Spring, we unfortunately usher in
another weekend system. By overnight Friday into Saturday, a
trough will drop into the central Great Basin. This will lead to
widespread precipitation, with snow possible above 8,000`. The
best chances (50-80%) for showers will be in the Tahoe region,
northeast CA, and most of western NV. Otherwise, precipitation
chances decrease to 25-45% for Mono County, the immediate Reno-
Carson City-Minden area, and southern Lyon and Mineral counties.

* We can also bet on stronger gusty winds, with west to northwest
winds on Saturday switching to gusty northerly winds on Sunday.
While it may be quite breezy across much of the Sierra and
western Nevada, there are some signals of potentially stronger
gusts along the Sierra crests (700mb winds from the southwest
around 35-40kts), and for the southern Sierra Front (Topaz Lake
area southward to Mammoth) on Saturday. Model and ensemble
solutions hint at a secondary low dropping southward into the
area on Sunday. But there is far less certainty into the track
and strength of this low. As such, we`ll maintain low 20-30%
chances for precipitation on Sunday along with well below
  average temperatures.

* Long-term ensemble solutions show a reemergence of a ridge
pattern, with temperatures increasing back above average with
  dry weather next week. -McKellar

&&

.AVIATION...

* Winds will be light and mainly from the west today, with gusts
up to 20 kts at all area terminals.

* Areas of IFR in patchy FZFG are possible at KTRK overnight
   thru 16z Thursday morning.

* Another storm is on the horizon for the weekend with more
winds, valley rain and mountain snow. There is an increased
trend for LLWS and mountain turbulence concerns starting early
Saturday morning continuing into Monday morning. -McKellar
