Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1200 PM PDT Sat Jul 19 2025
Updated Aviation Discussion
.SYNOPSIS...19/212 AM.
Showers and thunderstorms will be possible again this afternoon
across the Los Angeles county mountains. Otherwise, night through
morning low clouds and fog will continue for most coast and some
valleys into next week. A slow cooling trend will continue through
Tuesday. Then a warming trend will bring temperatures back to
normal by the end of next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-MON)...19/940 AM.
***UPDATE***
A deep 2000 ft marine layer has brought cloud to most coasts and
valley this morning, that will be slow to clear late this morning
and this afternoon. Lingering mositure and instability will yield
a slight (15 percent) chance of afternoon thunderstorms or
showers for the Eastern San Gabriel Mountains. Gusty winds and
dry lighting (fire starts) are the mostly likely hazards if a
storm were to develop.
***From Previous Discussion***
Moisture aloft has been decreasing since reaching its peak Friday
afternoon and this will mean less active afternoon convection
today, though can`t rule out some isolated heavy rain showers,
especially during the peak heating period. Any showers and storms
today are expected to be confined to the eastern San Gabriel
Mountains. Steering flow is still very light from the northeast so
any convection that develops over the mountains should not spill
over into the adjacent valleys.
Outside of the eastern San Gabriels, weather today is expected to
be fairly quiet, starting off with typical morning low clouds for
coast and some coastal valleys, then clearing most areas except
for some beaches. The Antelope Valley will reach the lower triple
digits again this afternoon, which is a degree or two above
normal, but most other areas will be slightly below normal once
again.
Cooling temperatures are expected again Sunday and Monday as a
weak upper low settles in for a few days just off the northern
California coast.
.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...19/243 AM.
High confidence in quiet weather next week with limited if any
impacts. Below normal temperatures are expected, though a gradual
warming trend is expected to start Wednesday with 1-3 degrees of
warming each day through Friday. Night and morning low clouds and
fog will be a daily feature for coast and many valleys, clearing
to near the the beaches by afternoon.
&&
.AVIATION...19/1859Z.
At 1826Z at KLAX, the marine layer was around 2300 feet deep. The
top of the inversion was 2900 feet with a temp of 24 C.
High confidence in desert TAFs, moderate confidence in all other
TAFs. There is a 5-10% chance of dry thunderstorms with the
potential for gusty and erratic winds at KWJF and KPMD 21Z Sat -
03Z Sun.
Timing of flight cat changes may be off by +/- 2 hours, and CIGs
may be off by 400 ft at any time for the remainder of the TAFs.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. CIGs could return as soon as
00Z or as late as 05Z Sunday. There is a 30% chance of BKN008
conds overnight, but higher confidence in predominantly MVFR
condition after 12Z Sunday. Good confidence that any east wind
component will remain below 6 kts.
KBUR...Moderate to High confidence in TAF. Timing of return of
CIGs could be off by +/- 2 hours, and off by 400 ft at any point
overnight.
&&
.MARINE...19/921 AM.
Overall, moderate to high confidence in the current forecast.
For the waters southwest through northwest of the Channel Islands
and beyond 10 NM of the Central Coast, there is a 50-70 percent
chance of Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds developing each
afternoon and evening evening through Thursday evening. There will
likely be a lull in winds below SCA levels during the late night
and early morning hours each day. Increasing winds and building
seas are expected for late next week with a moderate chance of
Gales.
For the nearshore waters north of Point Sal, there is a 50-60
percent chance of SCA level winds this afternoon and evening. For
Sunday afternoon through Wednesday evening, there is a moderate
(30-40 percent) chance of SCA level winds during the afternoon and
evening hours, increasing to 50-60% chance late next week.
Inside the southern California bight, there is a moderate (30-40
percent) chance of SCA level winds through Wednesday night, except
for a 50-60 percent chance of SCA level winds across the western
half of the Santa Barbara Channel this afternoon and evening, and
again Wednesday afternoon and evening.
