Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Fairbanks AK
153 PM AKDT Sat Jul 19 2025

.SYNOPSIS...
A bit of a pattern change is approaching. Today will be warm and
dry for most spots but there will be showers and isolated storms
from the Eastern Interior to Brooks Range as a front moves from
southwest to northeast. After this front, southwest flow increases
over the West Coast and Western Interior Sunday morning, then
into the Central/Eastern Interior Sunday night into Monday. Expect
periods of rain, heavy at times as a stronger front moves
through. A stationary low over the Bering Strait will then keep
chances for rain and cool temperatures for much of next week.

&&

.KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...
Central and Eastern Interior...
- Warm with sunshine. Storms over the Fortymile Country will
traverse west over the terrain through the day.
- A front will bring more widespread showers and isolated storms
this evening from the AK Range north.

- A stronger front moves through tomorrow night with the potential for
  heavier showers and isolated storms.
- Widespread rainfall totals of 0.10 to 0.25" with localized
0.50"+ possible in the most persistent showers/storms.

- A cooler and wetter pattern persists through much of next week.

West Coast and Western Interior...
- A front is bringing scattered to widespread showers to the West
Coast and Western Interior today and tomorrow.
- Widespread rainfall totals of 0.10 to 0.25" with up to 0.50"
in the Southern Seward Peninsula through tomorrow afternoon.

- Isolated thunderstorms in the Northern Western Interior this
afternoon.

- Periods of rain then likely tomorrow afternoon/evening and will move
  from south to north.
- An additional 0.10 to 0.25" with up to 0.50" in the Southern
   Seward Peninsula.

- Additional rain is likely through the week as a low sits over
  the Bering Strait.

North Slope and Brooks Range..
- Relatively mundane weather today with fog which will gradually
deteriorate through the day, and overnight.
- Gusty winds up to 35 mph from the east with the strongest
being along the Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast.

- Isolated thunderstorms in the Western Brooks Range this evening,
then numerous showers, heavy at times with isolated storms
tomorrow evening. Widespread rain likely along the coast by late
  Sunday night.
- 0.25 to 0.50" of rain expected Sunday night through Monday night
with areas over an inch likely in the Brooks Range from
   Anaktuvuk Pass east.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...
A low in the Bering Sea is the driving force of Northern Alaska`s
weather this weekend and next week. This low will gradually move
north over the Bering Strait tomorrow, then sit for a few days
before dropping south and east over the Western Interior and into
the Gulf towards the end of the week. The impacts from this will be
numerous rounds of rain, especially along the West Coast and Western
Interior which may be enough to end most of the fire weather
concerns. The Central and Eastern Interior will be wet as well, but
not as much. There will be a couple of fronts that bring scattered
showers this evening and tonight, then more widespread periods of
rain tomorrow night. As the low gradually moves southeast into the
Gulf, heavier rain is possible in the Southeast Interior towards the
end of the week with wrap around moisture.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
It will be a warm weekend with relatively low min RHs, in the 30s
and potentially spotty upper 20s, especially in the Tanana Valley
and Yukon Flats. High temperatures will be largely in the mid to
upper 70s with some low 80s possible in the Yukon Flats and Tanana
Valley. There will be isolated thunderstorms from the Fortymile
Country to the Western Brooks Range this afternoon and evening. A
front this evening will also bring chances for wetting rains from
the White Mountains, Dalton Highway Summits southwest. The Yukon
Flats will be the driest. Otherwise, a stronger front tomorrow
night will bring higher chances for wetting rains as periods of
rain move through from southwest to northeast. This will bring
widespread rain to many Interior locations, including the Yukon
Flats. Otherwise the Yukon Flats looks drier than most areas this
week, even though there will be numerous rounds of rain.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
No concerns at the moment, but numerous rounds of rain will allow
for rivers across Northern Alaska to gradually rise. We are not
anticipating any flooding, but some gravel bars may be covered,
especially in the Western Interior this weekend into early next
week.

&&

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...
The low pressure system over the Bering Sea is expected to
continue moving to the east, covering most of the mainland by
Wednesday. Southwest flow is expected to gradually transition into
northwest flow around the Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning
timeframe over Southwest Alaska as upper level ridging breaks down
and is pushed south by the Bering Sea low. Southeast flow is
anticipated for most of the mainland as the low will be centered
over the state. Precipitation along the West Coast is likely to
last through Thursday, with scattered showers possible in the
Interior and North Slope throughout the week. Hazardous rainfall
potential is still possible on Tuesday at high elevations,
especially for the Brooks Range and the Western Alaska Range. This
hazardous rainfall is then expected to move East and could impact
the Eastern Alaska Range and Fortymile Country later in the week.
The amount of rain shown by the models has the potential to
dampen and slow the spread of active fires. Temperatures are also
expected to drop into the low 60s through Friday and slightly
increase into the upper 60s into the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
West to southwest flow will bring some high water to the West
Coast about 1 to 4 feet above the normal high tide line Monday
through Wednesday. The highest water looks to be in Eastern
Norton Sound. Items on the beaches may be washed away if they are
close to the normal high tide line. There may be localized coastal
erosion as well.
