.KEY MESSAGES...

  today and Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...

A swath of showers will continue to deliver light rain to areas
along and north of the I-80 corridor through the morning before
tapering in the afternoon. Weak instability from surface heating may
allow isolated thunderstorms to develop in the afternoon near the
Oregon border, but probabilities of this are only 10-20%. Another
windy day is in store today with SW/W gusts increasing to 30-40 mph
in the afternoon. Ridge gusts should vary from 45-65 mph throughout
the day. Potential wind impacts include rough waters/more hazardous
boating on area lakes -- including Lake Tahoe -- and bumpy flights
into/out of regional airports.

Drier and less windy weather prevails on Saturday before gusty winds
and shower/thunderstorm chances return on Sunday. Highest rain
probabilities (30-50%) on Sunday reside from Lassen County to the
Oregon border, with a 10-20% chance of thunderstorms in the
afternoon. Elsewhere, chances are 20% or less, but may increase (or
decrease) depending on the depth/track of an upper compact cyclone
and attendant shortwave. Winds become gusty once again Sunday
afternoon, renewing wind impacts to holiday travel and recreation.
Otherwise, this Labor Day holiday weekend is leaning on the
cooler side with daytime highs in the 60s and 70s, which is 10-20
degrees below seasonal averages.

Eastern Pacific troughing is favored to persist next week, extending
cooler than normal temperatures, breezy afternoons, and low shower
chances through the middle of next week. However, there remains high
uncertainty in the prospect of remnant tropical moisture moving
northward into the region. Should this happen to some extent, expect
shower chances to increase around the middle of next week.

.AVIATION...

Light rain showers may periodically lower CIGS/VIS to MVFR
conditions at KTRK-KTVL through the morning, but shower activity
should taper after 15Z. A few showers may pass over KRNO, but
chances are lower (~20-30%). Low clouds may lead to mountain
obscuration at all terminals today.

30-35 kt SW FL100 winds will maintain potential LLWS and mountain
wave turbulence impacts into the evening before winds weaken. SW/W
surface gusts are expected to increase to 20-25 kts at Tahoe Basin
terminals and 25-30 kts at KRNO-KCXP-KMEV and KMMH in the afternoon.
